Can someone please help me with the throw distance for a Nec xg/85
for the min. throw distance for a 110" torus screen. I have a Sony D50
that I would like to replace. I've been thinking about going digital and
looking at the JVC RS1 but I like my crt a lot. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
John

Hello and welcome to the forum.

What lenses do you have on the XG? Probable HD144 or HD145's?

I'm not sure the guy selling it lives 4 hours away and he doesn't seem to know much
about it. But it has both remotes and ceiling mount and 2000 hours on it.

Can you at least get a non-flash picture of the tubes with the lenses off? A 2000 hour set, properly set up may be excellent, but a 2000 hour set done wrong may have toasted tubes.

Will you inspect it before you buy or are you having it shipped?

It was in a hospital exec. theater room and non-smoking. I will drive down at look at it before I buy.
before I drive all the way down there I need to know if it will need to be closer or farer away from
the screen than the Sony. I have limited space because of the way the room is set up with its walls.

Ahh I see, you're kind of in a catch 22 then.

You'll need Doug, or Mark or one of the other NEC guys to pipe in.

What lenses does your D50 have one it just for reference? HD-6's?

Not sure of the exact throw distances but the HD-144's have a shorter throw than the HD-145's. Maybe we can figure this out with PJCalc ( Sony ) and the NEC spec sheets.

Those are the stock lenses, it just give the guys that play with lenses a point of reference. One of the other guys will pipe in I'm sure.

It will have 144's. And I would mount it 1.3x screen width away for a normal screen, maybe 1.32x.

I'm not sure about a torus.

Is their lens that will let me mount it closer?

My xg135LC has HD-16's IIRC. How do those compare to hd-144/145?

I'll just throw out my current suggestion and confirm with a throw distance of around 1.35x screen width. Mine is pushing the boundary though and the raster is pretty close to the edge. I'll probably redo the setup here in a couple of weeks and I'm going to set it up just a slight further back. I have a XG LC btw.

Like Mark said the HD-144s need approx. 1.3x (Runco says 1.33x) throw distance.

The HD-145 should be about 1.4x throw distance (Runco also says 1.4x for the HD-145).
IIRC the HD-145 was a drop-in replacement for the HD-6C

I thought they're HD-18s.

In any case LC lenses are a totally different design due to the LC element (1st lens element so to speak) being part of the tube assembly.

As Kai said, the HD-18 LC lenses are completely different.

But for completeness, my XG with HD-144s (and Xtra) was bang on 1.3x width. My XG LC is at 1.3x + 100mm.

I would like to thank you everyone for helping me out. I'm going down tomorrow to buy the Nec if its in
good shape. I am not sure if I am smart enough to set the Nec up but maybe you guy's can
answer any question I will have in the setup. The Sony d50 was fairly easy to understand. No digital for me yet.
Thank you all.
