The upgradability is pretty much the same reason I picked a PS3 over the Sony S300 player as well. Not to mention that load time is measured in seconds, not minutes. Even if you never play a game in your life, the PS3 is still the most full featured Blu-Ray player out there. Believe me, I didn't want a game machine in my HT but once I got it, I kicked myself for not getting it sooner. And you know what? A lot of the free game demos you can get (via wireless internet) are actually a lot of fun even for non-hard core gamers! No need to do anything special - just click a few times, wait a few minutes, and the game is loaded. No Computer Science degree needed.

You forgot to mention the HD Trailers SONY does the same as APPLE does in releasing HD trailers every month.

I'm always confused about these sorts of comments. All of the players (Sony S300, Sony PS3) are pretty much just digital transports to most of us. The picture and sound quality out of both of these should be identical.
I did a *LOT* of research into which blu-ray player to get and left the PS3 out of the possible candidates originally because I really *really* didn't want a game machine in my HT. But then the more I read the more I realized that the PS3 was the *only* player that was pretty much guaranteed to be upgradable to a lot of the new features in the future.
I have a huge thread about my research here: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=5636.html
I started back when the Sony S300 hit the streets (June 2007).
My reasoning as to why it makes sense to buy the PS3 only as a BluRay player:
- The PS3 is the exact same price as the other BluRay players out there. Price is not a factor.
- The PS3 is the only one with 2-3 second load times (vs 30-90 second for the other players) and snappy remote response when skipping chapters, FF/REW, etc.
- Picture/Sound quality over HDMI is identical to the others out there - it's all digital.
- And the big one for me: Upgradability. Compared to the S300, the PS3 has the hardware required to do all of the audio formats (ex: lossless DTS-HD MA) for the future. The S300 does not and never will. The S300 was supposed to be replaced by the S500 in the fall but I gues that was delayed. I hope to buy a new pre-amp soon to do lossless audio. I don't want to have to buy a new BluRay player when Fox starts to roll out their DTS-HD MA discs soon. As well: Unlike the other players, the PS3 has already been upgraded to the new BD 1.1 profile as it has the required ethernet port and enough memory. The S300 does not.
No guarantee that Sony will actually offer the upgrades to do everything in the future, but unlike the other players out there, at least the PS3 has the harware to do it. No reason to think they won't issue upgrades however as they've been doing so all along.
- Resale cost. While I don't want to have to sell the PS3, if I do have to you can bet the resale value will be higher than a 2nd gen BD player as they're coming out with new versions of the standalone players every 4-6 months now. Take the Sony S300. It's been replaced recently with the S500. Good luck selling the S300 for any reasonable return if you want the new features of the S500. In comparison the PS4 isn't likely to hit the market for many many years (they're talking 2012 I think).
Don't like the PS3 because it's a gaming machine, that's fine, but comments like "the PS3 is a POS" without any explanation don't make any sense.

Harhar. Good joke. Actually Sony is talking about not releasing a PS4 before Spring 2016 which is of course not very realistic (think of the Nintendo Wii-Tri or the XBOX 1.000 )
