|
|
I'll be getting a new video card in my HTPC to play HD-DVD and Blu-ray. I see 8400 cards for about $50, will one of these cards work. My CPU is a AMD 4600 x2. I would like to do this as cheap as possible and only need it to play movies. i don't game so that isn't a need for me.
Thanks,
Erik

I'm assuming you got the 8400 GS. Did you get the one with 128 or 258 mb ram? The more ram on the card, the less the CPU will run. Less jitter and no skipping or freezing. It will work, just depends on how well.

I haven't gotten any card yet. Right now I'm trying to decide if there is enough difference in preformance when going to an 8500 or higher to warrent the extra cash. All the cards I'm looking at are at least 256 GDDR2.
The 8500 is also in my price range if I can get one for less than $100, I'm just not sure if it is worth the extra money if the 8400 will work.
Thanks,
Erik

From what I have read and seen the 8500 GT's With DD3 are doing quite well. The GS line of cards is slower so not sure if they can handle the higher resolutions. Also the DDR2 ram makes them slower again.

The reason I asked is because the 8400GS comes with either 128 or 256. You get to choose. There was suppose to be a 30.00 difference. The 8500 I think has 512mb of ram. Again the more onboard ram the better. Especially for HD playback. Decodeing HD uses alot of processing. Better if more of its on the video card.

AWWWWW.
Macgyver says: send me your board and I'll get my chewing gum and some fishing line and piggy back another 256mb chip on top of yours. Then you'll have 512 onboard.
