It has been mentioned in this forum that the chassis of the 1251 and 1271 are the same, ond the difference is the dd and de boards yet the resolution of the 1251 is 1024 by 768 at 1080i and the 1271 is 1600 by 1200 at 1080p. I have just replaced the df board in the 1251 with the dd and de boards from a 1271 does this now give me the extra resolution of a 1271

Adding the DD and DE boards from a 1271 gets you 21-pt convergence. There doesn't seem to be unanimous agreement over whether those are the only changes necessary to give a 1251 all the specs of a 1271 - in spite of what Curt's tech page on the matter says. I've seen references to the possibility of differences in RGB output boards, too - CA(G) and CA(B) - though, I haven't confirmed any differences myself and there would likely be different part numbers for them if that were the case. Differences in the RGB output boards would probably better explain any differences in rated bandwidth between the two, though.
Still... the part of your post about resolution is a little cryptic. Bandwidth and HScan are rated better on the 1271, but honestly - in practice, I don't know how much difference you'd really see with video. As for 1080i vs. 1080p, there is nothing about any 12xx projector regardless of how well it's set up that should lead anyone to believe that 1080p would be a good resolution to run. 1080i would be a good resolution that's suitable for both the 1251 and the 1271. 1080p bandwidth is WAY beyond the bandwidth capabilities of any 12xx and scan lines would overlap - a LOT.
Don't obsess over the specs - they're just specs. Specs are more marketing-driven than driven by actual substance in most cases. Just spend the time to practice and learn to set up the machine as well as you possibly can, and then watch some movies!
My 1271 is beautiful, but my buddy's 1252 isn't that far off. I suspect setup accounts for the lion's share of the difference.

Yes the extra convergance points are great, and the picture I am getting is superb I might leave well alone, rather than venture into magic smoke syndrome

70 dolar for each I think, bought them both trough hammerheadtech.
About resolution, haven't tested it yet but 720p feels a bit less soft after the mod to me.

I had a 1271 in my workshop and I pulled the boards out of it, maybe Curte has some boards for sale, he could give you a more accurate price for boards
