|
|
I hate cutting and pasting parts of emails as examples of how not to repair a projector, but here's one...
We had troubleshot the problem down to the vertical board in a Barco. Then I got this:
Replaced the fuse with a 1A pico-fuse but it blew instantly. While measuring present voltages i accidentally touched a safety-resistor near the fuse The red led on the board went out and the set came alive producing a horizontal bright line on the blue and green tube. Pressing ADJ made the bright line appear on all 3 tubes as they lit up. I replaced the 1A fuse again but it keeps on blowing. The voltage before the fuse is 9,98V (Is this to high? The manual states +9V)What could make this fuse blow? and what made the set come alive? Can the line burn in the tubes?
2nd update
I temporary put in a 2A fuse and the image is OK. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the voltage or explane the reason for the 1A fuse to blow?
3rd update
i connected a source (DVD) and chose input nr 1 the fuse blew immediately.
Now even the 2A fuse blows. This time the unit comes alive each time i push the standby button but it displays only the bright line.
Is the problem on the deflection board only or could it be on other boards aswell?
Where should i send the board(s)?
OUCH! Now I'm guessing tube burn and more parts blown on the V board.

Some people need to just leave the covers on and send it to someone that knows what they are doing.

Will be on ebay soon. "Looks perfect, but I don't know how to test."

Replace "barco" with "Ampro" and I would believe this actually happened......

All kidding and comradarie aside... This customer may be reading this running diatribe and it may be construed as being unprofessional (we can shrug this off, of course, but Curt as a businessman can not.)
Just my 1.3 cents.

Since you are so experienced with CRT's please inform the rest of us of all of the ways that tube burn can be caused. I sure don't know and would find this information useful.

As any good tech knows, when a fuse blows you simply put in a bigger fuse. If that fuse blows then you wrap it in tin-foil. If the set catches on fire after that you list it on e-bay as "good parts machne"

Just my 1.3 cents. | I'm sure Curt didn't enjoy posting this stupid-stuff on the board. Unfortunately, sometimes people do such stupid things that it irritates you to no end. You have to post about it and vent, and hopefully prevent any more of this behavior from other people.
| drice1234 wrote: | | please inform the rest of us of all of the ways that tube burn can be caused. I sure don't know and would find this information useful. | A tube is burned when there's a loss of deflection, either vertical or horizontal. In this case, a failure of the vertical board blew a fuse and by forcing it to come on again with no active deflection circuit present, a bright verical line was probably burned into all 3 tubes. So a $100. repair instead turned into a totally trashed machine.

Dragan, you basically nailed it. I could read between the lines that the guy didn't want to send me the board, which is why I cut and pasted his email anonymously. I'm sure everyone else in any kind of tech industry gets the same problem over and over, and this is coming from Mr Bargain hunter himself..
It cost me many $$ to learn that at some point you send it into the professional, like my backed up sewer last year, my truck, etc. It was a late model set too, it would be a shame if the tubes got nuked. I never heard back from the guy..

And I will bet you will not, because anyone that uses that diagnosis and repair process really is not aware of what the skill and knowledge required( and consequences of rash acts) when it comes to "tinkering" with this kind of gear. as far as the original writer is concerned I hope they are reading this, it was a foolish and expensive mistake but perhaps they will benefit from the lesson. There is nothing wrong with learning to admit you are out of your league.
