|
|
I just picked up a surplus XG minus remotes. It is a 39.... serial'd unit so I believe the PC control software will not work, Maybe I read that wrong but, anyway it sounded like the best thing to do was buy a universal remote like a pronto. I looked at the prontos and am clueless for which one to buy. I only need the minimum right now. Will the neo version work? they seem to go fairly cheap.
If I get a universal remote will I need a factory remote anyway to program the universal remote? Finally what kind of a pain is the pronto programing?
If anyone has a setup remote for the XG they would sell, I would love to take the easy way out and just buy that, but it seems like the pronto is probably the quickest bet.
Thanks

Curt,
I always feel guilty when you answer, I feel like I am taking to much of your time on stupid newbie questions.
Thanks for the answer. Does any pronto work? And is it a huge pain to set up, like some people have reviewed them to be? Thanks again
By the way do you need any zenith 850 pro parts or is the dump the best place for it? My son was playing his xbox on it, said "it shut off and won't come back on" I checked the fuses all are good so with the ecp-4100 waiting as backup now and an XG ready to hang I don't want to think about the zenith anymore.
Thanks again,
Bryce

I found it impossible on a Pronto.
Use a PC via serial control, or pony up for a proper remote.

I agree with getting the service remote. It is the correct tool for the Job. That said, it seems like that particular tool is hard to find. I'll try the PC control, but if I read the service bulletin correctly, my XG with serial # 3900299 is incompatible with atleast one version of the software. So I'll cross my fingers. Are there any particular concerns with the PC control, so I don't flub up the PJ?
Thanks Guys, I really do appreciate the help
The stupid thhing is this projector is in excellent condition, I bought it from a university where it sat set for desktop presentation with all its accesories for a decade before being hauled to the surplus center. Somewhere between the A/V storage and the surplus center the remotes where seperated and lost to the ages, or atleast me. I called back to the surplus center and was told if it came with a remote they would have taped it onto the machine. So there was nothing they could do. That is understandable but... How hard would it have been for someone along the line to have taken a 4 inch peice of strapping tape and fastened the remote onto the projector.
Well that is my rant. i suppose i got a good deal regardless and should quite whinning. It powers up and the tubes are good.

While PC control can do almost everything, one thing it can't do is point convergence iirc.

Don't feel too bad, when I bought my xg's there was a remote with one of them, linked to my lot number but held behind the pickup desk. The guy that bought one of the toasty XG75's snagged my remote at the pickup counter before I got there to pay. The auction house had his name and contact info but wouldn't help me out by contacting him to return it. Luckily I found one at an NEC repair outlet. They didn't think they would need it anymore so they sold it to me for about 60 bucks. It wouldn't hurt to give some of these service shops a call in case they have one laying around. I still call around once in a while in hopes of a nice pj being left on thier doorstep.

I do agree, the NEC remote is the best, the software second. The Prontos do work, I use the old 1000 ones since they are the cheapest, but for the extra $100 that it will cost you for the original remote from Hammerhead or other stores on eBay, I'd go that way.
PRO 851 parts, shoot me an email to curtpalme@shaw.ca. I could use 2 parts out of it, but there might be an easy fix. Do you have the old focus block installed? If so, you need the new style, then it will continue to run:
http://www.curtpalme.com/Zenith841_Focus_Block_Replacement1.shtm
If it has the new style and you want to dump the set, pls email me. I've got the focus blocks in stock.
