|
|
I am currently using a sony 1251 which was obtained fron a local university, It had not been used very much as it only 234 hours on the clock and everything is in the condition you would expect for those hours. I am scaling through a Taw Rock Pro and get an excellent resolution, the only problem I have is that the image does not seem very dynamic. If i increase the contrast and colour it seems to degrade the picture, I have adgusted the gamma to increase the black level but I am still not satisfied with the outcome, does anyone have any suggestions, or am I asking too much from this unit
Regards Mike

Welcome to the forum. You probably need to re-do your setup a few more times. The Sony 12xx series can really have a dynamic and punchy picture.
What resolution are you running the PJ at?

Currently I am running at 1280 by 720 with a refresh rate of 72hz which seems to achieve the best result

That's pushing it a bit on a 1251 from what I've seen, although with minty tubes like you have it's probably pretty good.
There's a Sony 12xx series setup guide that recommends a smaller resolution.
You can get that here: http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/Sony_1270Q_CRT_Projector_Setup_Manual_April.pdf
It's an interesting read.

I must admit I am pushing the performance of this rig, but you know what its like we like to squeeze the last bit to get the best performance, I work at an electrical retailer and what I am getting exceeds the performance of the new Epson 1080p projector.
I currently feed the Sony with a Nakamichi DVD player and a high definition PVR for Tv. I have read your thread regarding changing the boards from a 1271 into a 1251, I have a spare 1271 with about 5000 hours on it, Does this MOD make much difference.
Regards Mike

I don't think swapping in the 1271 boards will fix your problem, unless there is a board level malfunction. the projector probably needs to be setup from the beginning. Also, you could check you G2 adjustment, it could be out of whack. All you need to do that is a multimeter. There is a how-to somewhere around here.

Yes and just for reference, and refresher have you read the CRT primer? It's not model specific but may give you some insite and/or answer some questions you may have that you didn't realize you had.

I have just adjusted g2 calibration, as this unit was supplied to the university by the commercial sony dealer I assumed thigs like g2 adjustment would be right, how wrong I was, all test points measured around 1.17-1.6volts. I have readjusted these to as close to four volts as possible ( it is a bit awkward working with sesitive adjustments when the projector is hanging from the ceiling. I am now getting more definate colour. I am going to re-adjust the whole rig to see if I can get it any better, although the sharpness of the test pattern even with manual and electronic refocusing does not seem much better, maybee I am asking too much from the old girl.
Thanks for advise up to now Regards Mike

Fast check:
Check if raster is moving when you adjust electronic focus. If rasters doesn't move, adjustments are pretty much spot on.
1251 have only 40 MHz BW, that is little low for 720p 72 Hz.
1271 have 75MHz BW that is good enough for 720p 72 Hz, so swapping rgb signal boards should make noticeable effect to sharpness.

I have just swapped the DD & DE boards from my 1271 into the 1251, the 1251 only had one board in th DE slot which was named a DF board and nothing in the DD slot. Both units fire up and I have the extra zones but its bright sunshine in Australia and I cannot get conditions good enough to see if there is any other difference. I have not come across the DF board before, it is very small and just has a few resistors on it
