Well,

I broke down and ordered a screen yesterday (I also ordered the HDFury - green version advanced kit) Very Happy , both should hopefully be here by friday. Twisted Evil (insert maniacal laughter here)

I ordered the screen from eastporters:

http://www.eastporters.com/estore/cart.php?target=product&product_id=111&category_id=33

I went for the 120" 4:3 screen so I can play Nintendo Wii and computer games at the full 120" or when watching HD or widescreen movies it is exactly the same as a 106" 16X9 screen. Both are 98" wide. Also, when playing 16:9 material, I just won't pull it down all of the way.

I went for a 2.4 gain screen. I borrowed an old portable 1.5 gain glass bead slide projector screen. It's only 48" diagonal so it was a good demo size against the image I'm currently projecting on the wall. I was amazed it didn't help the brightness at all. It did make the picture more 3D which made me very happy. I've read a couple complaints about the 16x9 grey version that is 1.8 gain of the same brand, so I'm not worried about the extra gain. If I gain 10% light then I'm happy.

I'm hoping <puts flame suit on> that the higher gain will reflect enough light so I can keep the brightness at 58% and contrast at 60% just as it is now (although a bit dim). I know there's lots of guys out there right now thinking that's way too big a screen for my little NEC, but that's what's projecting on the wall right now and it looks awesome! It is after all, shining on a badly painted white wall (1.0 gain if I'm lucky). I was happier when both were cranked up to 75%, but right now, I'm very into tube preservation. I am NOT that worried about hotspotting. I believe there's even a forum member here that uses the fixed frame version with a 9PG of the same screen and likes it. A few others with NEC PG's have also told me via PM that they use higher gain screens and are quite happy. At any rate, it's too late now.

So far eastporters has been wonderful to deal with. It cost $357.39 including shipping by Purolator. Considering it's a 120" 4:3 screen, that's a very good price. FYI: if you want a motorized screen at a good price they are $125 off right now through eastporters.

I'll let you know how it goes and post pictures hopefully this weekend.
Cheers,
Chris

Well, the screen is here. After a minor (I hope) problem with my red tube I got to see what's going on. WOW, Big difference. Blacks are blacker, whites are whiter, colors deeper and more vivid, not to mention the image has come to life, very 3D like. Not much brighter, but it's now where I want it for light levels.

Even though it's glass bead and 2.4 gain, there is NO hotspotting.

Now I just need customs to give me my HDFury then I'll post pictures. The temporary set up is perfect for it as the image overshoots the top of the screen by a foot so you can really see the difference.

I just grabbed a Runco 900 (6PG in a black case )with a tick in it( the electronic kind, not the bug )

I'd love to see you take a screen shot with a piece of white paper up there too for comparison.

What are the cons of getting a really high gain screen, for instance, one of these

Possible hotspotting. That's where you would see the reg, green, and blue reflected back at you along with the video you are viewing.

Similar to the DLP flairie effect? Smile

So then, perhaps something reasonable like 1.3?

-edit-

K. A bit frustrated here. I have a wall that would fit a screen 7x6. 7x7 at the most.

At 10ft, the Sony throws a picture about that big.

http://cgi.ebay.com/6x9-PROJECTOR-PROJECTION-SCREEN-MATERIAL-FRAME-INST_W0QQitemZ250195714685QQihZ015QQcategoryZ48655QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Now, for stuff like that, are they saying, it's 6 feet tall and 9 feet wide?

I always thought it was width and then height.

This stuff is called blackout cloth. You can get it cheaper and make your own frame out of wood. Check your local fabric store and home improvement centre.
