I haven't played with my Marquee in a long long time and am trying to get back into my home theater. I'm considering either getting either moome's External box, or the VIM-HD... Any performance advantages to the VIM-HD? Looks like the External does more for $100 less (more inputs, audio out)

Also, any idea on what signal a Marquee 8000 will be able to show? I presume a 1080i is the max, and 1080P out of the question... but that's just my guess since I haven't played with Marquee in a few years.

Thanks much

I found the external to be a better value.

In a nut shell the stock 8000 can do 1080P but you probably won't like it. It will be soft with overlying scan lines. I have not tried it myself.

With upgrades it is possible. I am still sticking with 1080i now. If you get enough upgrades done you may want to reconsider.

I would recommend upgrading at the very least the neck boards and the VIM (Video Input Module) to ones from a Marquee 8500.

Other mods:

Focus yokes (Frankenyokes) from a Sony 1292

For the ultimate example of what a 8" marquee can do look up
Mike parker Mods (MP mods).

Another problem with 1080P is even if you get it sharp on the tube face the stock HD-8 lenses will not be able to resolve it well.

Because of this many people upgrade lenses (to HD-144 or HD-145).

So if you search on keywords that I have parenthesized above you will find much info. Welcome back to CRT. You are definitely in the right place!

Thanks for the info. I used to be way into home theater, and got ISF trained by Joe Kane back in the day. I haven't had any time for HT in recent memory and would really like to get back into it.

I've casually followed over the years and seem the Mike Parker mods. My only concern about going crazy with mods on the 8000 is that it is an 8000. I'd rather sock the cash away and go for a 9500LC in the future if I stick with it...

Thanks again for the info!
