If Curt's idea does not work,
It looks like it has a retaining ring. If you push down on the top ring and then pull the wire it should come out. Push the ring down first before pulling on the wire. A lot of air lines, water lines and electrical connections use these now days.

I just did one of these Magnavoxs the other day. There are 2 little ears on tthe connector on the tip of the wire. It catches on the inside. You may have to pull pretty hard to get it to come out and when it does you will see the little ears are bent back. Just bend them back where they are suppose to be with needle nose pliers and it is fine for when you put it back in. Good Luck!!

could i poke a toothpick or something in the little clip? It's my gram's TV and I trust your advice, but I really, really don't want to risk anything at all.

It almost looks like there are some little tabs on the insert that holds the wire. If you can press them in (probably another on the opposite side?) the insert may come loose.

i think i f-ed up big time
I pulled out the HV lead like macguyver said.... but part of the little ear clip thing broke off and now is sitting at the bottom of the splitter.
I was scared shitless at this point, to see part of the clip gone with just that little snippet of wire at the end, so I put the HV lead back in and slipped hte boot back over it, and fired up the TV. It comes on, thank goodness, but now makes an audible sizzling/growling kind of noise at a low volume, and there are random lines that appear in the picture. I pulled the HV lead out and reseated it, hoping it was just making a bad contact. I hear the sizzle from the HV lead itself, like pressure escaping from a tyre that's been dunked to check for flats. When I pulled the lead out, I could hear the pzztfftttt coming from the end with the little wire. The TV still makes the noise and there is a picture disturbance; the 16khz whine is also a bit distorted... I didn't leave it on too long because I know that maggies are notorious for blowing flybacks.
what do i do?>

Wish I saw that pic first. That flyback is different form the one I described, but I have broken those clips off before even when pushing in to remove. They are very fragile. Try using a vacuum to get the piece out, or something sticky on a pencil eraser. Make sure tv is unplugged when doing this. After you remove the piece the wire should now go all the way in. The one remaining clip should hold it in place with the boot. After you assemble it and before you plug it back in, tug on the wire slightly to make sure it is holding. If it seems to pull out you can use a couple of nylon ties to hold it down.

What I meant was, I actually heard the slight fzzfppzpz coming from the wire. After the set was off I pulled the wire out and as I was holding it in the air I heard it hissing.
I'll have to find a long slender piece of plastic to try and get the little clip out of the splitter, or maybe get a drinking straw and 'vaccum' it out that way.
What if it keeps making the frying noise after I get it out? Do you think it could just be due to a bad contact?

Bad contact or possibly a small rip in the cable

This is the point where you put the lid back on and call a repair shop

SILENCE.
Magnavox factory removal tools, part #34872-2211

The set no longer fizzles
A bit of overkill, but I don't want to even go near touching that little bastard

The offender. The bottom was a bit charred, as suspected.

If that bubble doesn't go away, I'll pull the tube again and add a bit more glycol.
sh*t - I got some of that stuff all over my right hand, and I have a small cut. Do you have to -ingest- this stuff for it to kill you? I washed my hands immediately after. The fluid in it was the consistency and colour of olive oil. All I did was open the vent plug and let it drain though there, after using a syringe to take out a fair amount.
What's this about a repair shop?
I feel so goddamn accomplished. I'll admit it wasn't the easiest thing in the world... it was quite, quite scary at times - like lifting the tube out of the chassis and not banging the neck against the metal rail... and making sure hte wires idnd't get caught... phew!
But my grandma was pleased as punch, even with only ONE tube cleared
Some of that horrible shadowing is now gone, and the blue comes through nice and strong.

You might live. Use wart remover on that third ear that'll grow from your forehead.

Hey mcgyver...
When you did the coolant for your Maggie, did you loosen the 4 big hex bolts and disassemble the CRT like it appears in the service manual, as attached?
All I did was drain the coolant, filler'up and put the tube back in. I was very very scared of a few things, namely knocking the magnets out of place even by a hair, getting glycol inbetween the lens coupling, and getting glycol on the yoke or anything else, but I really wanted to clean the tube face and internal lens face of the crap that had built up inside it.
No one scream at me... The lens element was never touching the floor. FOr whatever reasn the green lens is much more recessed than the others, and it has little plastic tabs that keep the lens well away from the floor.
If i loosen those screws, where is the glycol going to leak first?
