Let's suppose that I had a formerly toasty 808s which now has 7 or 8/10 tubes. What screen size ought I run in a totally light controlled environment - velvet backdrop, velvet ceiling cover for a meter or so at the front, dark carpet, dark matte wall paint.

I'd rather like a large screen, but I'm inclined to believe the people who know about this type of thing vs. myself, who knows... well, that a 1271 looks really good in a light controlled but with pretty bad reflected ambient light from the screen, at about 60 inches but up around 65 contrast.

So, what's the advice from people who know? Any suggestions appreciated.

My screen's just slightly above unity gain (depending where you sit) and it's 96" wide and driven by a projector that's basically a high end 808s. Contrast is at 60-65. Completely light controlled all around. Picture is very bright. The 20-40 HT guys that have come through over the years have never said it's too dim. In fact quite a few have commented that it was considerably brigher than their setup and started to rethink their own contrast levels...
