Walmart is starting their Black Friday sales early and they are gonna have the Toshiba HD-A2 for $98.87. This is an outstanding deal. Especially considering the fact that you get 5 free HD-DVDs by a mail in rebate.

Check out all the details plus other sales items here:

If this is true then I'll be going back to Circuit Chitty for an adjustment to the $197 I paid on Tuesday.

This would be nice if a.) My local Walmart carried the Toshiba HD-A2. It would be nice if it carried any player, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, other than the Xbox 360 add-on and the Playstation 3. b.) I didn't already have one.

Wierd that when you go to the link and click on the A2, they aren't even advertising it as HD DVD....just "DVD Player"

I just called a local Wallyworld and....this sucks! I can't have it for the advertised price of $98.87 due to some bull**** deep discount law WI has. Twisted Evil But I CAN drive over the border into Illinois to get it for the ad price.
No WONDER the mother f-ing taxes are constantly on the rise in this state.
The lady told me I can order it and have it shipped to the store for under $100 but then I lose out on the 5 included movies.

Looks like I"m going to Illinois before work tomorrow. And gas just jumped to $3.00 a gal today. Beautiful.

Wow, these deals are getting insane and I love it. Too bad this player only supports 1080i and none of the new lossless audio codecs. I just hope that within the year someone will put out a player for under $200 that has hdmi 1.3a and will bitstream the lossless codecs. Unfortunately right now most of the higher end players only do this and its mostly because they include some audio decoding abilities within the player. All I want is a player to bitstream these signals (have no extra decoding abilities to jack up the price) as I will have a receiver capable of decoding them. Only time will tell...

Greg, don't feel so bad. The closest Wally World to me has rot iron cart returns for that Beverly Hill kind of class since its 1/4 from a nice country club. They sell plenty of HD-capable displays, too. But, consider it an anomaly if they sold a single HD DVD or BD title, and unless you are luck they didn't even carry the HD DVD drive for the Xbox, and only the PS3 for BD playback.

Its just amusing to to see SLK500 and M5's and H2's in th parking lot along side of the vehicles of a lot of extreme low income families. I'm guess they live in the basements of the rich folks around here.

Duh... Who do you think takes their trash, cuts their lawn, takes care of the pool, changes oil on the BMW and SLK... teaches their kids.

Laughing Laughing
Wrought iron shopping cart corrals...wow. They'd get stolen, chopped up, and converted into other stuff around here. Too funny.
I called a Walphart in Waukegan, IL just over the border from me, the closest over the border, and the only guy in Electronics was Russian with a HEAVY accent. It was a struggle to understand him;

After a little chit chat that didn't seem to be going anywhere I asked for a manager,

"No manager. Just me. All day. No whon a-yells."

"Ummm...OK. Soooo...it's you all day, which means you have to display the things for tomorrow morning unlelss you have a night crew doing it, which still means you should know if you have them or not to sell tomorrow morning...no?"

"Cumpewters and all a-yells for special iss tomorrrow. OK? You drive here and be at eight oh glock. HO-K?"

"Yeah but I'm driving down from the north to get one. I don't want to drive all the way there that early if you aren't going to even have them for sale. See where I'm coming from?"

"Hhhyes. Hup north. You come later than if 8 oh glock hiss to airly."

"Wait. Each store is only going to get something like 60 of them. If I come down there later, I may lose out."

"You khall airly than. So seam-pull yes?"

"No. Not simple at all. Yuri. Not simple at all. I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning and hope for the best."

"No. I whill be not working tomorrow. By by now"

<click>

*sigh*

I think I may just hang tight until lower priced 1080p w/lossless are available. I can live with the XB360 HDDVD til then I guess.....I was looking forward to basking in the glory of a score tho. Laughing

EDIT:I have absolutely nothing against Russians. It was actually a refreshing change from Spanish or Sanskrit.

The A2 does support DD+ and True HD. However, only over HDMI. It's send aas multichannel PCM. It will downconvert DD+ and True HD to DTS on the toslink output.

Of course, 1080p is only important if you have a PJ capable of resolving it.

Hm, I didn't realize that, are those the only lossless audio codecs? I thought there was DTS-HD MA but then again I don't think any hd-dvds support this feature yet. I would be using HDMI as the pre I am looking at has the ability to decode all of the latest formats over hdmi. I don't need 1080p right now as my pj only needs 1080i. Really the only important thing for me is to have the ability to have most/all of the audio codecs available through HDMI (1.3?) and the DVD upconverting needs to be better than my xbox 360. For less than $100 this would be a good deal but is this what I am looking for?

BTW I have no idea by when you say PCM!?!?

Wow. For under $100 even a format-war-phobe like me might have to say "WTF, why not!?"

That's assuming the local Wally Worlds have any left by the time I get back in town this weekend.

Here's more than you want to know about PCM Wink

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCM

I guess you can say it's raw digital data. I just parroted what I read elsewhere. Embarassed

For DTS-HD MA, the specs say something like - dts-HD processing of DTS core only. I assume this means it will downconvert DTS-HD MA to normal DTS but I'm not sure

I am not seeing it listed on Best Buy's website, and neither of the two Wal-Marts near me has ever carrier a Toshiba HD DVD player.

I had a friend who works at wally world pick me up one for a christmas present.

Too bad I bought mine a couple months ago for $230 or I would pick one up. Next thing I need for myself is a PS3 so I can play blu-ray movies too.

I was told you can purchase it online and have it delivered to the store for the Super Secret Sale price. That's what I was told anyway.
After work today I'm going to have to drive all the frigging way down into Illinois to get one. They're selling for $189 here in WI because some a$$hole politician got a bill passed relating to deep discount sales of this type. WTF!!!! Jaggoff.
If you aren't in one of the blacked out states listed in fine print under the pic of the player on the site listed at the top of this thread...it seems to me they would be obligated to offer to get one for you at that price.
But then, I live in a very naive world of my own. Embarassed
