So, how long can two HD formats exist in the same market?

I'd really like to buy a HD player but history has proven that if I take a right turn, I should have turned left. So which one to buy?

Funny, I posted this earlier: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=7281.html

It got almost zero interest. And I now own two HD DVD players and one PS3.

looks like they're both here to stay, from where i'm sitting anyway. i'm tired of waiting for a reasonably priced universal player though, as soon as funds become available i'm getting this for $400.

New discs are on their way with HD-DVD on one side and BR on the other.

By which time universal players will be available.

By which time downloadable content will be a major player Wink

The content war will not be won by us hobbyists, if it is won at all. It will be won by the average consumer.

Hey,

I'm all about Blu Ray because that's what I bought and I love it.

However,.. If you're thinking about a HD DVD player Sears has a Black Friday Toshiba for $169 and it's a third gen player unlike most of the sub $200 models. It doesn't do 1080p though which can be significant depending on the rest of your system.

If I wasn't already into Blu Ray,.. I think I would buy that cheap 3rd gen player and rent the heck out of HD DVD via Netflix until the war was over. With under $200 out of pocket you can enjoy the format war without fully comiting yourself.

I believe Blu Ray will win the format war because they sell more discs, have more capacity (50GB>30GB), have higher bandwidth, have more companies making players, and have more studios supporting them including Fox (Star Wars) and Disney (Pixar) so it's hard to recommend a HD DVD player but since they can be had for next to nothing and people can rent until the storm is over,.. it's not so hard to recommed after all.

Blu-Ray for me. Very soon now. I'll be buying Ratatouille on Blu-Ray (it's not available on HD-DVD) the day it's released,
even though I likely won't have a player until later in the year. I've got to get an HD Fury as well. And I'm revamping my
theater at this time anyway. Frankly I don't expect to watch a movie in my HT for the remainder of this year unless I get bitten
by the motivation bug and get enough time off from work to make it happen.

Just got one of these so I don't care who wins the format war.

My biggest fear is that NEITHER HD/BD format will win -- that they'll keep slugging away at each other, preventing large-scale adoption of EITHER format in the market, until some cheezy low-res downloadable format comes in and takes the market away from them. Sad

Now Gary! That would never happen. Look at the succes of DVDA and SACD vs MP3. Rolling Eyes

The LG was just released for about $280 and that's the one I went with.

Have watched a few HD DVD movies on it and it works well. Blu Ray next.

What is interesting to note is that for me the prerecorded high definition industry is doing a lot better job that the [re]transmission industry--cable and satellite content providers. I have not spent a moment nor a dime to upgrade the method for which paid-for HD content is delivered into my home in almost three years.

I've so far spent $900 on equipment that I own for HD DVD and BD playback and nothing on DBS or cable. Why? Because they over-compress, reduce resolution, and provide mediocre STBs that I pay a handful for, get contractualized heavily, and it stays someone else's equipment.

As such, I can live with this format war for a while longer as the other so-called providers are worthless in my book.

These things are very elusive (popular). The latest places to have them and sell out (in hours) are/were:

Newegg

PcAlchemy

Check these guys out. I don't know if they have them in stock but I spoke with them a week or so ago before I bought mine from NCIX and they said they could get me one if I ordered it.
