TV/Projector: Sony G90 X2 - Vidikron Vision 1

James, my main display (as my CRTs are now boxed up) is a Sony KSR200R70 (in the US its the XBR2) - you are dead right, my Sony display wont accept 1080P via VGA, only via a HDCP enabled source/HDMI/DVI.

I suspect that all Sony displays will be the same (modern ones, like your Black Pearl anyway). When I finally unpack my G90s again I'll test out to see if VGA will work on my Gigabyte 8800GTXs. I know of two clients that haven't been able to use VGA for 1080p with their 8 series cards - when I contacted nvidia directly on their behalf, they wrote back indicating that 1080P for VGA was disabled for HDCP compliance. Perhaps their intepretation does not include ICT or they have chosen to implment in this way because ICT detection isn't something they've implemented yet? I will find out what brand they have and what driver version they are using.

With such slow uptake of HDCP enabled displays, its going to be 2011 before a majority of the population have become adopters.

Terry, if you could confirm that you were talking about analog (VGA) I'd like to know what brand+driver version too. Same with Chris.
I know that I've been recommending that people just use a HDFury or similar device if they find they can't use DVI/HDMI.

Darn, yesterday I sat down and was about to order this drive and no one has it. In fact, if I wasn't ticked off at myself for waiting I would be more ticked at those a-holes on eBay buying them up to charge a premium for them.

I'm starting to get the feeling that forces at work are enforcing the illegality of this product in the United States. I wonder if I could fury one of these out of Canada.

When I install the Powerdvd that comes with the drive, there is no shortcut to launch it. Only some Cyberlink frontend software for launching utilites. Powerdvd is not one of the utilities in the frontend.

When I run it from the powerdvd folder i get trial expired , enter key

How can I get Powerdvd to install properly?

Thanks
Darren

How will you folks be extracting the multichannel audio? Will most integrated HD audio on today's motherboard handle the current HD audio signals? Really curious before I go ordering today. You guys teasing me again?

You could use the 8 channel analog out from your soundcard and do all the decoding in software, player support pending (or already here, haven't really looked into it yet, but that is the general idea). I will probably be just using s/pdif coax to my processor and sticking with the compressed audio until some (better) HDMI video/sound card solutions hit market, then upgrading my pre/pro and going that route. I might try analog in to my pre once or twice just for kicks, but using all those little 1/8" jacks just gives me the willies.

S/pdif doesn't have the bandwidth for the uncompressed multichannel digital stream, if that is what you are asking.

Actually, if I use an Abit F-I90HD motherboard with HDMI output to feed an HDMI-equipped AVR? But, this is meaningless as the above image shows the unit out of stock again.

There are a whole slew of mobos with hdmi onboard and claiming multi-channel audio support over that link. It is unclear to date which if any of them support the uncompressed PCM required for the HD audio formats, and/or how well. Testing has been limited and detailed mfr. info is not forthcoming. If you find a known working solution, please let us know! I am personally more interested in an add-in card solution, as I'm really happy with my Asus P5B, but I'd consider anything when I get to that point.

EDIT 2: I should add, to clarify the above, that it requires hdmi 1.3 to handle the encoded HD audio bitstream (to send to a pre that can decode it, for example) and that mobo is hdmi 1.2. So the only digital-path option would be decoding in the player and sending the uncompressed stream over hdmi (which your receiver would also have to be able to deal with, of course), but it is not clear that this is possible.

Newegg shipped my order today, and is still showing the drive in stock. EDIT: Although it looks like they added 10 bucks to the price since yesterday.

EDIT 3: I should add that I could be wrong about any of this. Wink. It is a very confusing topic, but I have been looking into it, and that is my understanding at this time. Corrections are encouraged.

Trying to make sure one's chosen mobo is 1.3 spec on HDMI is like trying to find all but the most expensive AVRs that has the same qualifying condition.

BTW, they did add $10 to the price, but mine continues to show OOS and Auto-notify as the only option. Checked via multiple computers to insure not a cookie thing, but all show OOS.

Well, yeah, I didn't say it was easy. Just necessary, afaik, if outboard processing of the encoded bitstream is your goal.

Following the link I posted above shows out of stock for you? That's weird. This was just now, after clearing caches:

Back to $299 as well.

Shows in stock for $299 for me, too. Still a little too rich for my blood considering all the other crap you have to put with it HTPC-wise to have a good playback system. If I already had a hot-sh*t HTPC, I guess it would be pretty tempting, though considering the "ripability" factor. Would be handy for Netflix time-shifting. Wink

I think I'll wait untill they are a bit cheaper and can burn bluray as well. I was one of the first in buying CDR drive and DVDR drive at these sorts of prices and up, I am going to sit this out a bit. I have enough hours of hd on my harddrives as it is.

My first external SCSI CD-R was about $1300. I shopped around mail order and bought Kodak and Mitsui CD-R's from Mediastore in San Fran for $15 on down to about $8 or 9 before they started becoming available in local stores for fair prices. So, I'm not scared by a $300 optical drive. Of course, I made money with the old CDR and the new combo drive is just toy. I'll wait a bit because of all the other costs associated with setting up an HTPC to play HDM.

Yeah SCSI cool 8) I paid about 600 for mine in the days, 4 speed at the time. But I'll wait 'till these burn bluray as well, for a nice 25GB backup. Then prices will still drop some more. Ah well it costs a bit to be early adopter. I'm sitting this one out for another while, but I guess it makes sense if you run a htpc and want to rent bluray and hd-dvd now. I don't think my old pc would be up to it, at least not 1080p. Well maybe with some tweaking, but 720p H264 runs fine now. When I upgrade to a pj that can handle 1080p I'll do this upgrade Smile

Drive was delivered today, just in case there was still doubt that it was real. Wink

I probably won't bother to install it until I receive my moome card and have a chance to redo my set up, at least once more (I don't seem to even be resolving 720p very crisply at the moment), but I'm glad to have it.
