Hi

I´m new to CRT and scalers are a completely new area so I have a few questions.

I have a DVD with only S-video out = soft picture. I am going to get me a newer one but I´m not sure what´s best (not brand or model) to fees my Leeza with?

Most new DVD:s have built in scalers and other fancy picture adjustments built in but I think it´s best to feed the scaler with as "pure" signal as possible and let the Leeza do the scaling job. Am I right on this? I mean it doesn´t seem to be a good idea to scale a scaled signal. I use component not SDI or HDMI

How does a pure signal look like (resolution)Is it 480P on the disc from the beginning?

Best resolution for my EM 8500LC seems to be 1440/960

Then it´s about adjustment of color, brightness, gamma and more. My question is: if I first , for example, set brigtness to 50 and then adjust it from the scaler can I go over the 50 that I set on the CRT? Or is CRT 50 the highest it can go?

I think you got it right.
The whole point of having a scaler is that it does all the de-interlacing, scaling and any frame rate conversion, and not the source or display. NTSC DVDs are native 480i60, so that's what you should feed to the scaler.

I also have an HD Leeza and a 8501LC and run 1440x960P too. I would get a newer DVD player so you could take better advantage of the Leeza. I can set the output resolution on my player to 480I before it gets to the scaler. If you can find one with that option it will give you the best results.
