As you know Ferret I don't know anything about games, but even with the games you mentioned (I watched a revue of Rainbow Six) don't you enter an area, complete a task, move another area, repeat. Over and over and over.
They all seems the same to me.

The way you interpret those games can be applied to almost any kind of game. Heck, I could apply it to real life. I entered the bedroom, completed the [wife] task, and moved onto another area, which happen to be the kitchen and family room.

Phil's got a point, though. I haven't played any PS3/etc games, but many many many games are VERY repetitive. My kids always want me to play Wii games with them, which are generally OK for a little while. But many of their Wii and Gameboy games bore me to tears within a few minutes because it's the same thing over and over. Many games have different activities in them, but even those tend to fall into the same basic operations which within them do the same thing over and over: search/destroy/shoot, fly/shoot, race/shoot, solve puzzle/shoot, etc. Even the ones that don't have some form of shooting (disguised however) have the same basic idea.
When I was a lot younger I enjoyed games like that more. I dunno if it's because it was new tech then and still fascinating, or if I'm just a curmudgeonly and unpleasable old codger now. Probably some truth to that.

Gary, I think as we get older, things that use to seem like a new adventure, now don't seem that new nor that adventurous. At least that's how it is for me.
I guess that's pretty much the definition of a "curmudgeonly and unpleasable old codger". I'm guilty as charged!
Of the demos I've tried so far, I like the racing games best. I might actually end up playing them on a fairly regular basis, as I've been enjoying them. My favorite is MotorStorm (mainly because it's the easiest).

So Phil, how old are you and Gary? I just want to see where I may be heading in age and attitude.

Phil, I downloaded the demo for the Simpsons game and finally got to play it this weekend. It was fun and hilareous. The demo only lets you switch between Bart and Homer, but it was pretty easy to play, yet still challenging.

You're likely like me then... (and I'm only 38 ).
I'd also recommend the Skate demo. It's pretty funny because you can do some pretty fancy tricks immediately without knowing what the hell you're actually doing. Motorstorm's a lot of fun too because it's dead simple and the crashes are pretty good.
I don't have the patience or the thumbs to do more of the other games anymore.
Kal

My God, you must be like what 200 years old or something?
I only have limited experience with the PS3 so far. But Call of Duty series is simple in the button department, and fun and fast pace. Ninja Gaiden, a classic, is more advanced when it comes to all those wonderfull buttons, that'll drive anyone above oh say 150 years of age crazy.
So first person shoot-em up are simple, third person fighting games have a bit more buttons to push, to the point where you wish you had four arms but 80 fingers.

TGS '07: GT5 Prologue mounting two-pronged attack Dec. 13 in Japan
Polyphony Digital experiments with dual distribution strategy with its forthcoming PS3 racer.
By Hirohiko Niizumi, GameSpot UK
Posted Sep 23, 2007 6:40 pm PT
TOKYO--At Polyphony Digital's press conference at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, president Kazunori Yamauchi announced that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be released in Japan through two methods of distribution on the same day.
On December 13, the game will be hitting Japanese retailers, and will also be offered for purchase via online download. Like the PS3 exclusive Warhawk, which was also distributed via downloads and boxed game discs, GT5 Prologue will have a two-tiered price point: 4,500 yen ($39) for the downloadable edition and 4,980 yen ($43) for the retail version. More details can be found on the game's official Web site.
GT5 Prologue's ship date comes after the announcement that a free downloadable demo for the game--which is itself a preview of 2008's Gran Turismo 5--will arrive on October 20 via the PlayStation Store. The demo will be part of a tie-in campaign with the Tokyo Motor Show, which takes place four days later. One of the drivable cars in the game will be revealed via a grand unveiling on the show floor of the automotive event.

I'm a fellow gamer and have been looking at the ps3 for some blu ray playback for my XG, but also some games. I've heard the ps3 is one of the best players on the market and happens to be one of the cheapest, but I still have a couple of questions. Does the ps3 offer all the latest hd audio codecs bitstreamed over hdmi? I know it has 1.3a hdmi so it has the capability of bistreaming and also decoding but last I heard it could not do DTS MA. Most importantly, can the ps3 ouput games and blu rays via hdmi at 1080i? Thats another thing I heard was it could only do 1080p. Info is a little confusing because of console updates that have vs the ones that will "possibly" come out.

Doesn't bitstream DTS-MA or TrueHD. There is speculation that the 1.3a chip used is not able to do it (and some who dispute this). Apparantly bitstreaming high-def is optional for 1.3a. The PS3 does decode TrueHD, and can handle lossless PCM (maybe they all can). There have been persistent rumors that it will one day decode DTS-MA, but not so far, and not in the most recent firmware update, which was much ado about nothing (unless you own a PSP) in my opinion.
The output resolutions confuse me, I believe it can do 1080i for movies. I think the games are dependant on the game developer. Not 100% sure on these points. It has only seen limited action in the theater as construction is ongoing.

That stinks, the plan is to get a hd dvd player and blu ray player that can output everything so hopefully i won't have to upgrade anytime soon. As always though new stuff does come out but I should be set for a while. Well, does anyone know of a hd dvd player and a blu ray player that has 1.3a hdmi and can bitstream all the latest audio codecs? I believe the A30 and XA2 can do just about everything but DTS MA but I'm not sure.
