Advent's 1000A screen was aluminum, was dull surface and retro reflective, funny how things go full circle Same concept, there's a viewing sweet spot and other angles are reduced brightness Looking at this post and considering options if fabric in screen posts doesn't work Screen quality is still important for best projector performance. I''l post some pics when my R2 unit get calibrated!

?? I'd be very surprised if it was retro reflective. A "dull aluminum" surface (like e.g. the dull side of aluminum foil) is an angular-reflective surface: shine a light on it and it reflects like a mirror, except it disperses the light because it's a "dull" mirror. A retro surface reflects like a stop sign: shine a light on it and it reflects back to the source.
I believe Advent's screen was curved, yes? Curved / toroidal / etc screens require angular-reflective surfaces. Curved screens don't work with retro-reflective surfaces because the curve doesn't affect the light reflection. It still reflects back to the light source.

There is like a million screens to choose from, not sure what is more important to you, price, size, electric, fixed...

i ended up getting a 58 x 104 cosmopolitan from Sparco.com (never heard of them before, but the screen showed up...) for 727 +97 freight.
now to get that ht room finished so i can WATCH something on it!!!

Question. those of you with Cosmopolitan or similar electric screens. how do you guys "operate" them? does anyone use a 12v trigger from a receiver? if so, what is req'd to wire it up?

You should be able to just plug it in.it's my understanding that the 12v triggers are triggered one at a time on most systems to start things up.Thats how my amps come on line

ok, back to the 12volt trigger...
i have the screen, but it DOES NOT have a 12 volt trigger input. does anyone know of a way short of shelling out hundreds for a dalite 12v trigger add on?
dang, i wish i spent 10 more minutes researching before i bought this...what good is an electric screen if you have to get up to MANUALLY hold down the rocker switch to lower your ELECTRIC screen.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

it looks like it can be had for less than$90. i think all i need is 2 conductor wire run from my receiver (instead of the pj) right? that would be great, cause all i ran to the screen was a single run of 14g inwall speaker wire!!!
i appreciate any help. if there is a way to make it remote controllable i'm all ears as well, but really all i "need" is for the screen to drop when i turn on my denon receiver.

If you need the screen out of the way when it's not being used and mind doing it manually. You only have to do it before the movie and after the movie. Not to big a deal.

yup, i called and that should do it.
the cool factor of an electric screen is that i didn't have to walk up front, lower it etc. if i had run power wire so i could put the switch closer to the seating, i could get away with it.

The Advent used (or in my case, uses) spherical optics -- all elements (phosphor targets, mirrors and screen) are spherical segments with a common center of curvature. The Plexiglas CRT covers are the Schmitt (sp?) corrector plates. That is, the tubes are essentially Schmitt cameras (about f 1.0) run backwards in a sense.
The screen material is aluminum foil which has been electrochemically etched (developed, as I recall, by Kodak but I haven't been able to find that stated anywhere in years) and is glued onto the curved substrate; some screens could be "rebuilt" and some not (I have one of each). You sneeze and the screen is permanently damaged (rather literally, I'm afraid) -- as far as I have been able to tell, the screen cannot be repaired by anything short of replacing the foil. The foil is a very high gain screen and it also exhibits considerable color shift off the central viewing axis.

just an update on the hi power.
thanks to the OP for putting me onto it. i have lived with it for a little over a month and am thrilled. while i have not calibrated the 9500lc yet, at 50 contrast and 50 brightness, i get a beautiful picutre on a 9' wide screen and 10-12' viewing distance. the pj is directly over my head and quite low. front and back rows are on risers to bring the viewing angle down.

I recieved my screen material samples from Da-lite this morning. I requested a Cinema Vision, Video Spectra 1.5, Matte White, and of course the Da-lite High Power. My current "screen" is a painted white wall so I was getting the other screen materials for comparison basis.
Watching a few clips from Cars, Hot Fuzz, U2 Rattle & Hum and other movies I had on hand I was very impressed with the High Power material. It has exceptional gain when you're close to the light source, to accomplish this I blocked up my couch so seating position was ~32" and there was ~15" from eye level to the center of the lenses on my G70. The seats are about 15' from an 8' wide screen with screen center 52" above the floor.
I took some screenshots and will have them in my next post.

The color shift really shows up in these shots but in person it seems less pronounced and I'm guessing it would be even less visible with a larger sample or complete screen.
