I'm thinking of building a media server with about 2-3 TB's of hard drive space. Does anyone have a suggestion for a HT based media server software solution? Thanks,

TVedia is real nice if you don't need a DVR. Unfortunately the company no longer supports it.
To keep using it, you can get a patched exe. They do not sell any more licences for the software, so I don't feel too bad about going that route. Might want to at least check it out. It's very nice.

Marc,
What do you do, download the 15 day trial then a patch to validate it?

You can't activate it because they won't sell you an activation
However there is a "WORKAROUND"

John are you using this yourself? if so what features do you use... I have looked at this a few times with an eye toward whole house integration with a couple of touchscreens, and was wondering how well it works.

I don't need all the extra stuff that it does. I have a Crestron system for control. I just need the server to store and play back movies.

Wether or not you're gonna connect the media server directly to your viewing device, wouldn't VLC media player do the trick? (and it's open source and free.) I've never tried it myself as a streaming media server, but from what I know, if you're using VLC as a streaming media server and are using same version VLC for player on the client/s (Linux, OS X, or Windows) it all works, even using an internal network with IPv6.

Go to www.cellarcinemas.com and see their HTPC-797 Vista Media Center Server. This is what I wish to buy or build.
I have a couple of months to make up my mind as the new equipment room isn't even built yet.

I'mnot using it currently, i have used it in the past and it works well, the whole house integration can be a bit touchy but it got ironed out and was fairly easy to use w/ crestron Touchscreens

If you want something that will integrate very well with your crestron check out autonomic home's media server software. I have been running on my home setup for a while and I am now technically a dealer for it. It works great with feedback on the screen, don't think your TP will support the cover art but it does provide cover art on TP's that support it.
