I don't think ebay will sweat losing footing in Australia, they have failed in other countries before and will probably go belly up in a few more before its over

There was a study done that showed that auctions that start low, with no reserve, bring more money, so what you guys have been saying is true. The problem is that sometimes such an auction ends when no one on ebay is bidding on that type of item. Then it ends up selling cheap!
I know this first hand. Sometimes someone with little or no feedback would get a LOT more than me (I have high, good feedback) for an identical item. It took me a long time to figure out that not every auction has equal potential to bring top dollar. It's a bit of a crap shoot actually. And that's where reserves come in. It protects your auction from selling way too cheap.
I usually didn't use reserves anyway. I sell for a living and have lots of stuff to sell, so I need stuff to move. If it sells a little cheap, oh well, hopefully I'll hit a home run on the next one. Now I'm strictly ebay store sales. It takes longer for an item to sell, but overall I get more money than I use to, so it's worth the wait. Plus waiting for something in a ebay store to sell is no big deal. I just throw them on and forget about them. They sell when they sell.

I understand the "hidden reserve" seller's intent, but study the results of closed items... NR items end up with more bidders and higher winning bids.
The other ebay practice that seems flawed is when Buy It Now disappears after the first bid. If a seller is willing to sell for $500, why shouldn't a 2nd bidder be able to click "Buy It Now" anytime during the week? |
I've bought items that had a BIN after there were a few bids on it. Is that set by the seller?

Ebay is a sinking ship, their attempt at forcing Paypal only in Australia has failed and they are in for a shock when the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) tell them that they also cannot force everyone to have Paypal in order to sell, currently Ebay expect all sellers to have Paypal in their listing (you can't list without it) but that is against the Trade Practices Act 1974, no matter how big Ebay think they are they cannot get past our Trade Practices act if they want to trade in Australia.
. . . . |
I don't see how the ACCC can stop eBay from doing business over the Internet in Australia.
 |
Quite simple really, if they want to have Ebay Australia they have to abide by our Trade Practices Act 1974, if they don't follow our laws they can get the hell out!
They have offices and servers operating here in Australia, the ACCC can have them shut down and assets seized to cover any fines imposed.

The BIN feature doesn't disappear until the reserve is met. Sellers that list BIN auctions with low starting prices and/or with low reserves don't know what they're doing.
It also cost extra to have a reserve. That's why many sellers start their auctions at a high price (the minimum price they're willing to sell it for) with no reserve. It works the same as having a reserve (protects the seller from the item selling cheap), but without the extra fee.
Here's the various auction fees. Ebay sticks it to the seller every way they can: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html
