Not that I'd spend that kind of coin for a CD player... I've just never seen Barco Audio.

Audio is Barco's roots... Barco is not just a name: it stands for Belgian American Radio Company...

I found this part of his auction particularly amusing.. He does seem to be a reputable guy though.

Copied from his auction:
I welcome all questions, as for lowballers and tirekickers, I am tired of seeing you all castigated from the Ebay community, I am tired of people treating you as if you are sub-human, so bring it on !, c'mon, insult me, and for the kickers, ask for more photos, ask to peek under the hood, ask me the sales tax rate the original owner paid, I'll do my best to dig up the details, and in the process, maybe I'll learn a thing or two. Thank you sincerely for your consideration !

LOL! Laughing

Please note for the record that the following is, in reality, a humor piece. The fact that it's 100% true is incidental.

Valued for its "realistic and analogue presentation"? OK, when I'm dictator, new rule: Nobody can speak a word about audio equipment until they pass a basic electrical engineering class.

There may be reasons for a pro cd player to cost a lot of money, but the only *possible* difference in output performance between this three thousand dollar audio anvil and the cd-man my high school buddy used as a candle holder for a year in the mid '90s is in the D/As at the final output stage. Thirty-kilo-money-pit Barco may - may - offer a percent or two there, but even that's pretty unlikely.

If anyone thinks that thing produces a more "realistic" sound than any other CD player, I can provide you with a DVD drive which will provide more "realistic" playback of DVDs, and a hard disk which will yield more "realistic" excel spreadsheets. Did that sound ridiculous, but my previous statement harsh? If so, your brain is in reverse and fifth at the same time.

Should I continue? No? Well, I will anyway. It's only 1am, and my ignoramus audiophile encounter quotient is already maxed out for the day. There are two words which can describe the parties which will be involved in any 'successful' conclusion to this auction. One of them is "sucker" and the other is "sheister"; I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader which is which.

There are many areas in which I'm willing to tolerate eccentricity of opinion, but guys like this are either deluded or outright frauds - and neither option adds up to 'reputable'. That said, this is also an area in which my disdain for the defrauded may actually rival my intolerance for the fraudsters - and this being the case, anyone who's bid on that auction is welcome to contact me if they'd like a new volume knob for their acquisition. It's only five hundred bucks and it's wood, so the vibrations make the data better.

What?! Well, the fact that the previous line describes a real product which received rave reviews is all the justification I need for this heartless rant.

I'd say I'll rest easy knowing I haven't insulted anybody who doesn't deserve it, but that, too, would be a lie. The mere knowledge that the willful ignorance of manufacturers, promoters, and consumers helps direct the audio business evermore toward a wretched miasma of lies and despair, combined with the fact that I actually like to create and listen to music, is enough to ruin a good night's sleep.

It is a cruel, heartless world when any audio purchase I make is forced due to circumstance to support, however tangentially, the industry's knowledge-challenged masturbatory LSD trip. And it is a crueller world still - perhaps the cruellerest - when even a visit to the relative safe haven of a canadian engineering savant's high voltage image generation forum yields yet another shot of the collective societal bazooka-barf that is audiophilia.

OK, I'm done. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to find a wall to bang my head on until I pass out.

I can't see the auction as ebay is blocked from me right now.
Barco does have a line of studio/lab grade audio gear. Some of there cd transports cost over 15k. Sometimes you see Barco speakers on ebay, but they appear not to be high end.

I saw that on ebay as well. I was stunned to see a BARCO CD player.

I actually own a Studer A-727. (FREE) Sounds good to me, but what I like about it is the fact that it's servicable and well built. (Like a tank)

But hardly worth stratosphere bucks. It is still a Philips CD player at it's heart.

Marc

Not to rehash an old topic, but the CD player went for $2,745 BIN!
