|
|
|
I currently have a XG with minty tubes and I'm looking at making a lateral move to a G70. I could use some input. I'm not interested in making this move because a G70 is better or anything but possibly easier to deal with. I know its larger but quieter and an easier setup. I probably will eventually get a pro setup and I would certainly think it would be easier to find someone setup a G70 rather than my current XG. Overall, how much easier would a G70 setup be? I know most people just set this up and leave it for years and years but since I'm pretty young I plan on moving probably a few times until I get a permanent place to stay. I just need something a little easier, I got into this ht hobby for movies not necessairly to play around with my crt. I realize that some of you may suggest for me to get a digital but after having my XG for a while there is absolutely no way I'm giving up this picture. I seriously considered the option but digitals are simply not going to cut it for me, at least right now.

Sorry, I don't understand this move. If your XG LC is already all set up and running now, what are you gaining here?
You're going to have to take it down and put the G70 in its place and learn its nuances and set it up from scratch. A lot of work to get you back to pretty much the same place.
Both projectors are technically 'equivalent' (some people will argue back and forth as to which is better but they're pretty close IMHO) so the time is mostly spend on learning on how to do something on that particular chassis. The concepts are the same.

The current place of my XG is temporary so I will have to move it anyways. Although it is setup, its not setup very well because I just got tired of messing with it and wanted to watch some movies. I don't consider myself very fluent in the XG so I pretty much would be in the same spot sticking with the XG or going with a G70. If someone could just answer this, is there a pro who could setup my XG for a resonable price? For some reason I'm thinking since the XG is the most difficult to setup I would probably have to pay a huge premium to have it setup, but I could be wrong.

Doug Baisey is the definitive NEC guru. Chuchuf is widely regarded as an NEC setup guy also. Both are members of this forum.

Getting a G70 DOES make sense because the minty tubes in your XG could serve as a spare set.
On the other hand,.. it doesn't make sense if you crave 1080p. While my G70 does great with 1080p,... I've gone back to 1080i and I really think you need a 9" CRT to do 1080p with the proper sharpness.
You have a XG with minty tubes,.. I have a G70 with minty tubes,... I wouldn't pass up a spare set of minty tubes as spares but think I would be better served to pick up a disstressed M9500 and rebuilt it over the next few years so I can move up to 1080p.

Not true. The XG is only difficult to set up for people new to CRT projectors as there is no guided "follow the steps" on-screen setup. The XG actually has MORE controls than many other projectors so a pro can actually get an XG set up a lot faster since everything is more flexible.
An XG was my second projector after I had learnt all of the concepts on a Barco. I found a the XG a dream to set up as you had full control of EVERYTHING through menus... there are 100's of options.

I agree with Kal (as usual :p). I've had an XG and I currently have a G70. While the XG is daunting to a newb (it was my first projector), it is not that difficult to set up. Its controls are logical and straightforward. It has a few advanced options but you can do a good job without them, and incorporate their benefits as you figure them out.
The G70, by comparison, has IMHO a braindead memory model and whoever designed its zone adjustment system was on bad drugs. Plus there are "gull-wing" optical distortions that are apparently inherent in all G70's, according to Terry. And I'm not convinced it's that much quieter than an XG. It's been a while since I had my XG but I guarantee you the G70 is a ton louder than an 8500.
So you want a G70? Wanna trade??

In the Dallas, TX area. I don't know of any pros that are around this area. I heard about someone making a huge trip later this fall but I won't need a setup this soon.

I don't think I would need the spare set of tubes. I probably will make the move to a digital by the time I finally get 10k+ hours on my crt as digitals will probably finally achieve a level I would be satisified with. (many many years from now) I'm fine with the 1080i setup and won't need the 1080p.

Hmm, dunno. Thats why I asked you guys and it has definately given me a ton of great info. While I can continue to practice the setup and get this a little better there are a few things I probably will never be able to do. These would include color balance and G2 levels.

Is that a general consensus? I've been thinking of trading my XG (AC version) for a G70. One of the reasons is that the XG is just too noisy for me, and I just assumed the G70 would be much quieter. Has anyone tried the G70 fan modification in the Advanced Procedures section to see if it makes a significant difference?

Scott,
If I recall correctly, the fan mod you speak of really turned out to be a dud. The fans used turned out to be overpriced crap and simply did not cool the projector enough to keep it within its original range. There is a thread on the avs forum about a XG fan mod. It is still in the process, but hopefully it will work out. Have you looked at building a hushbox? I'm probably going to have to do this as well because I agree with you that it is simply too loud.

Nate,
I'll definitely go the hushbox route if I stick with the XG I already have, but since it's only an AC model going through all of that is less appealing. I would really like to move to LC and there seems to be a lot more G70s for sale these days than XGLCs. Is there a specific thread you're referring to on AVS about the XG fan mode?
Thanks.

I'm in the same boat with the XG fan mod... Gary's guide wasn't that clear on what exact types and quantities of fans were needed. He hasn't responded to my question, so I think I'm just going to order what I think (hope) he means. Maybe I'll post some pictures and such when I get around to doing the mod.
