Greetings again. Just how viable is 1080P with a Marquee 8500 (excellent tube condition); I'm only asking because on the primer of this site it outlines that the image will be somewhat smeared despite manufacturer's claim that it is capable of supporting such resolution. Thanx.

Alright then - How about anyone with a Marquee 8500 currently running 1080P kindly volunteering their opinion. Thanx.

I have summoned Mike Parker to update you, his newest level of VIM and neckboards can take you there; if impressed, pm me for buying info.

I ran my Marquee 8500 at 1080P and it looked amazing both before and after the upgrade to use the HD144 lenses. See screenshots at;
https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=3976.html
Mike Parker mods are nice but cirtanly not required to do 1080P on the 8500.
If your budget is tight I think the biggest benefit for the 8500 was the addition of the HD144 lenses and a good gamma correction device (I use Kims transcoder with gamma correction)
If your budget is really tight the only upgrade I would strongly recommend is a gamma correction device.
If you have lots of $$$ ditch the 8500 and upgrade to a 9500 Ultra with MP mods, 10F lenses, LUGs, etc, etc...
Chris.

I'd agree with Chris, except I'd do the color-filtered lenses before the gamma. For me, the 8500 *really* needs color correction to look right. If I had a choice between color-filtering at 720p, or no color-filtering at 1080p, there's no contest.

You could probably get 1080P to look acceptable on an 8500, but in no way would a stock 8500 fully resolve 1920x1080P. The only exception here is what VDC may have done with the Marquee, but that capability was not there with the Christie Digital or Electrohome version of the 8500.
1080P is fine, but may not be necessary. I would suggest 720P or 960P. True 1080P on an 8500 is a bit costly.

Thanx very much for the invaluable information. It was recommended here that I purchase the HD Fury to hook the projector up to my PlayStation 3; Does this device have the gamma correction which you mentioned? If not, how do I effectively incorporate it?

The PS3 doesn't have any gamma control at all. A middle of the road video processor usually has gamma control. Of course, if you go the Moome card deluxe instead of the PS3 you will get a form of limited (but effective) gamma control.
It all depends on your budget. If you have money to burn, get MPs mods and a Crystalio 2 VP. It has very advanced gamma tweaking abilities, low IRE, high IRE - S-curve and even seperate, user definable R,G,B channel gamma.
All the best

So, I take it that the HD Fury does not have any gamma control capabilities? Is this accurate?

None whatsoever - it is a very passive device
Having said that, I prefer the HDFury over a Moome card for a PS3 - the Fury looks nicer to my eyes. Gamma notwithstanding

Well, how do I obtain gamma correction if I choose to use the HD Fury?

There is no way that I can afford those types of processors!

Use Kims transcoder (RTC-2200) with gamma with the HD Fury.

Except if you want to use HDMI, the transcoder isn't really the correct choice. Its more for component - > rgbhv
Seeing as the OP doesn't want to spend much, the cheapest choice seems to be the Moome
Staying analog means when ICTs become reality, he'll have to buy another solution and the transcoder would become redundant

Agreed, but the OP can order the HD Fury and the RTC-2200 and actually get them both right away. My understanding is that the Moome card for the Marquee is sold out and who knows when the next batch will be available.
I am currently using the HD Fury with the RTC-2200 and it looks amazing on my 9500Ultra with MP mods.

Mike, I agree, a stock 8500 or 9500 will not fully resolve 1080P. But I think a properly setup 8500 looks better at 1080P then it does at any of the lower resolutions. (Unless you only watch test patterns)
At 720P there are visible scan lines which take away from the nice smooth image that the Marquee throws, 960P is only good for DVD playback, so for HD-DVD or Bluray, 1080P is the way to do.
Chris.
