Is there a updated completion date? Wasn't the house slated for completion about a year ago. You must be getting itchy to finish this up.

We are shooting for early September. The delays are driving me nuts as you can imagine...

I think you might be a bit optimistic, on houses this size I told my clients move in day will be about nine months after the last piece of sheet rock is hung. Finishes take a long time.

You'd have to have read through the thread, but there was a priority shift last fall and I think the theater is well behind the rest of the house, Joel... So, the September move-in may still be realistic.

Ahhh - my apologies. I stopped keeping up with the thread a very long time ago.

You'll have to ask the architects - DeLay, DeLay, and Pospone!

The rest of the house is done, and now the focus is back to completing the theater. Here's a quick photo update:

Congratulations on having the rest of the house finished, and thanks for the updates, Arnold!
That ceiling looks beautiful, and I love the color scheme and column details. What's the new finish date on the theater? Looks like you might just be a couple of months away.
Can't wait to see the whole space with the scaffolding out of there.
Cheers,
SC

Arnold did you ever find a supplier of a seamless screen of the size needed ?

Hey, Art!
You really need to spend a few minutes combing this thread - Believe me - it's worth the small time investment. At the very least, flip through and click on the pictures... The scale alone will make you giddy...
Here's some of the relevant bits of the discussion on the projector...
| garyfritz wrote: | | Let's see, if we assume he's got the ultimate anamorphic lens so he can use the full 4:3 panel area, then he can use the full 12000 lumens. 28' wide would be 441'^2 for a 16:9 screen. 12000 lumens / 441'^2 = 27 ft Lamberts! Yowza. Even if he didn't use any kind of anamorph, and for 2.35:1 he only used 57% of the panel & thus 57% of the lumens, he'd still be throwing 0.57 * 12000 / 333'^2 = 20.5 ftL. Should be enough even for a 103 seat theater! |
| achase wrote: | | Your lumen calculations are based on the original 12K model and not the last of the special cinema units. The last units used special ILA panels that were native 16 x 9, had faster response times, superior colorimetry, and much higher contrast ratios. Also important to factor in your calculations is the use of the upcoming HQV line quintuplers. They will take the native 24p H-Def player outputs and convert it to 120P. In doing this the on-screen brightness is increased about 30% over the usual level. The autoranging ability is one of the main reasons I went with the older technology. |
| achase wrote: | | The projector that is being built will be a combination of elements already seen in previous models as well as prototype circuits, hand picked components, and newly engineered circuits. It truly should be "one of a kind". I can only go by what those that have worked on these projectors tell me. It is the opinion of several of them that, all things considered, this projector should deliver an overall superior picture compared to most of what is out there. Having said that, do I expect this level of performance to be exceeded at some point in the future by a 4K projector, etc.? Of course. But for now, given the cost of literally pennies on the dollar of the original cost of the 12k, it would be foolish not to give this route a try. If at any point in the future something better comes along, the 12k gets unbolted and something else can go in it's place. In terms of brightness, with a 7,000 watt xenon lamp, there should be considerably more than enough screen brightness delivered - I'm not quite sure what a "newer" projector could accomplish in this area. With regard to resolution, for now with an ability to project 1920 x 1080p/120, again It's not clear to me what a "newer" projector would yield. With regard to other metrics such as contrast ratio, while I can't give you exact theoretical contrast ratios, the model 320 I'm using now with the special "cinema grade" light valves actually produced more contrast than I wanted - I asked Leo to 'dial it down' a bit! With regard to the 'analog only' input, that obviously isn't a problem with the format converters out there. Finally, not having a fixed pixel display allows far greater latitude in keystone correction, etc. |

So has the projector as originally selected been deleted and replaced with an up to date projector? There are quite a few D-cinema projectors, 2K and 4K both, that will wipe the floor with the JVC LV machine shown. The past three years have seen incredible leaps
in projector technology and we are on the very edge of a major breakthrough: High lumen output digital projectors using LED lamp
sources, thus creating the projector with a 50,000 hour service life and no lamps to change. The eternal projector, practically.
Though the selected Hughes LV machine may be very good, I think that support for it is ALREADY going to be a problem if it breaks.
I'd rather go with something more supportable, such as any of the digital PJs that are in widespread use in cinemas all around the world now.

This project has taken so long that the projector spec'd for this theater is no longer in production. I wonder if he's already got it or will something else be installed?
Glad to hear the rest of the house is complete. Have you moved in yet? What home automation system did you settle on?
Tom's real good with Crestron
