When 99.999% of the genral public cannot create and environment to benefit from, or gain access to testing equipment to verify such marketed digital performances, the lies keep getting bigger and bigger. Why not market this as 40,000:1 since there ain't no way any of the buyers can actually measure anywhere near the marketed claims?

And this isn't static contrast, but probably dynamic contrast with an iris performing 50:1 to 100:1 light modulation.

Hmm what is the standard specification for measuring contrast seems like it's different.

Don, I do not know the specification--if there is one. I'm guessing there is a 'standard' for ANSI contrast, but its more of a idea, no?

For instance, Full On/Off contrast would be to project a full-field white (unbloomed) field and measure the amount of light. Then put up an uncrushed full-field black and measure again. Divide the larger by the smaller and you get a dimensionless ratio. Sony is advertising that this can put out 1,000-lumens and from this I would expect the minimum amount of operating light to be ~0.286 lumens. How many have devices that can measure this for the field?

IIRC, ANSI contrast relies on a black and white checkerboard pattern with the same amount of field area for black as there is for white. You measure the center white block for maximum amount of lumens and then repeat in the center for blacks. Divide larger by smaller and get the dimensionless ratio. The idea here is that blacks should become elevated* and whites not as bright.

And with the advent of modulating light there is dynamic, or virtual contrast. You modulate the light output to its lowest setting when measuring for blacks, and you remodulate the light output for maximum when measuring for whites. Divide the larger by the smaller and get the lovely result that is being marketed in that Sony ad.

Boy, I have been away from this geek talk for +2 years. I may be full of sh!t. Very Happy

PS I am not against Sony achieving this level of performance provided it can be a) verified in someone's home, and b) someone sells a measuring setup for less than the projector so that verification can be checked. Of course, renting the measuring (and calibration) equipment is ALWAYS an option (been there, done that).
