I'm enjoying it immensely, as are my guests who come to watch movies in my HT. In fact, I'm having some friends over to enjoy it tonight.

WOW, that's strange...I'm doing the same thing tonight with Blu-Ray. Seems as though both formats will allow the owner to have friends over and enjoy!

Enjoy HD DVD while it lasts
Brian:
Just curious, but I think every post I have read about HD DVD's (that includes Blu-Ray by the way), you have to throw in a "enjoy why you can", or it's going to take a little while longer for Bu-ray to become the format standard, etc.. Do you have anything NEW to add to your OPINION? Or do you just like reading your posts of your OPINION (the same one over and over in different words)? To think the Paramount announcement means little or nothing, to me,(MY OPINION) is pretty short sighted on your part. To say "I'm not going neutral" is also pretty short sighted. I hope HD-DVD becomes the standard, if Blu-Ray becomes the standard, I WILL buy one. So you're saying that if HD-DVD wins and Blu-Ray is no more, you will still not buy one? I DOUBT IT! Every time ANYTHING happens good for HD-DVD, there's a Blu-FanBoi there to piss on the fire. For ONCE Brian maybe YOU can keep your pants zipped up! BUT....I doubt it.
Enjoy your Blu-Ray and I'll enjoy my HD-DVD. If you have any NEW opinions, I'm sure we would all love for you to share them.
In review: BRIAN LOVES HIS BLU-RAY AND THINKS IT WILL BE THE NEW STANDARD. DOES NOT LIKE HD-DVD.
What?..............
Oh,.................
EVERYONE (that's right, EVERYONE) already knew.

Every time I see one of these pissing contests, it makes me think it just aint a party without Dave (Person99)...... and HD-DVD will be the winner
..cheaper media for the studios, cheaper licensing, cheaper players, as for the quality thing,if that were really important we would all have true HD display devices instead of the upconverting junk that everyone seems to be buying.

The problem at the moment is, as far as I can tell, most of the bluray titles are single layer and MPEG2, with DD5.1 = a slightly better TS file.
The HD-DVD's seem to be VC-1, many with DD True HD.
Anyway, I don't really care about which format, I just want quality and titles.
My wish list so far:
- Matrix Trilogy (HD-DVD only?)
- LOTR Trilogy (HD-DVD only?)
- Aliens/Alien (not yet)
- Baraka (not yet)
- Chronos (got it on HD-DVD already)
- 5th Element (Bluray, but I have to be careful or I'll get the crap one)
- Original Star Wars (not yet)
- Final Fantasy (not yet)
- Blade Runner (HD-DVD soon)
So far it's 8 to 1 with the rest undecided. But Blu-ray is too expensive currently, quite ridiculous actually.

Interesting, I don't think many people would put Baraka on their HD wish list, but I can certainly see why -- especially since it was filmed in 70mm. Are you a fan of Koyaanisqatsi too?
Chronos -- I assume you mean the Ron Fricke version, not the Guillermo del Toro vampire flick? I haven't seen that one. Is it as good as Baraka?
Which Final Fantasy would you want? Spirits Within? I wouldn't think of that one as an HD must-have.

Gee, I hope Dave is OK. Somebody mentioned him over at the other site in a BD/HD-DVD pissing match context and I realized it has been awhile since he was around. Looking at his forum profile here, he hasn't been on since 31 July. Almost 4 weeks is a long time to be away. Anybody know what's up?

Look how many are not buying into either HD format, because they are waiting for a winner. If this continues, Both HD formats will go the way of the two HD audio formats.
DVD took off because it offered a clear improvement in PQ, and it was THE ONLY serious format of it's type.
Within a couple years a download service will start up, and that will be very simple for the masses to get into. Once that happens it'll be all over for HD disc.
There is a couple year window to get this HD disc movement going strong...if it doesn't happen, we will never see the title selection that we enjoy on DVD.
This format war WAS very close to being over, but all is fair in love & war, and Microsoft/paramount has just thrown a big wench into the whole thing (maybe)
I never bought into HD audio because of the format war, and now it's to late, so I decided to jump into this one after seeing which way the sales were headed...now that this has happened I've decided to stop buying titles because I don't think either format is going to survive.
Like politicians, the idiots that run these hardware/software companies never learn. |
The reason that I stated that it because I personally find it hard to imagine Sony announcing the $100 price cut recently if Toshiba had not been in the mix. Likewise, without the competition from Sony, I doubt that we would have seen Toshiba pushing to release new generations of players at lower price points. The software hasn't really dropped in price, but the hardware has practically nosedived in the last year, which I applaud. Perhaps I'm taking a simplistic approach, but I can't help but think that this competition is actually helping to accelerate the adoption of HD disks by mainstream consumers.
As I see it, this "war" isn't going to be over any time soon. There is simply too much money invested on both sides for either to wave the white flag. In the meantime, more and more exclusive titles are being released. When (if) a winner is declared, it will still take years for all of the titles released in the losing format to be re-released on the winning format. For myself, the "extra" few hundred dollars in hardware cost is worth it to enjoy the movies that I love in HD. Naturally, everyone is different.

Thanks Clarence.
8 to 2.
And Bladerunners going both ways so it could be 7-3.
I wish they would release a reasonably price Bluray drive (reader only) for the PC.

I have the Quatsi trilogy on DVD, but I don't think they are anywhere near as good as Baraka.
The Chronos I meant was Ron Frickes - I haven't seem the Mexican Vampire flick, but I know what you mean. Chronos is a warm up for Baraka. It's not in the same class, but not bad.
Final Fantasy Spirits Within is just eye candy.
I'd like Starship Troopers too

Not true. I own 19 Blu-Ray discs now (all sorts, from 50 year old movies to the latest blockbusters) and the only ones that aren't lossless audio are much older or odd titles or documentaries. Most are lossless PCM.
I'm on neither side but both look and sound the same really. The technology behind them is NOT a reason to choose one over another.
The single layer vs. double layer is not a valid arguement because you have to realize that each one layer of Blu-Ray holds 25GB while two layers of HD-DVD holds 30GB. So it only makes sense that *MOST* HD-DVD's that require both layers to be used.
I'm likely going format neutral myself and picking up an HD-DVD player in the fall.

I'm about ready to buy a blu-ray player. I won't even consider HD-DVD.
