Early 1209 PJs have been characterized as lower resolution due to CRTs that they were equipped with. As you see I am asking a relatively vague question. I have a line on an older circa 95 1209 and wonder if I really wanted to get serious, I could replace the CRTs and end up with a Barco even better than my 1208/2.
I understand that the 1208 and 1209 are very close to the same PJs except obviously for CRT size. What would I gain going to the 1209? I know the specs are different but those who actually see the results might have more useful comments.
Any comments?
I posted this in the MP forum by error. I suspect there are more people with experience here with both PJs.

Is your 1208 LC, If not you will gain that by going with the 1209; I'm no Barco expert so other than that I'm not sure what Advantages you would get. I think that you may be able to take the lens housings and LC chambers off of the 1209 and use them on the 1208/2

I suspect the LC lenses will make a great improvement as well. I already did the HD-144 conversion so I have colored lenses of good quality. I suspect the cost of the 1209 would make the LC conversion a bit prohibitive for my 1208/2.
I need to inspect the 1209 Friday to see if the tubes are in good shape anyway....

The LC is a definite improvement as is the upgrade from 8" to 9" CRTs.
Worth the effort, if the 1209 is in good shape, despite its older vintage. IMO

I saw this 1209 on eBay in SoCal and was going to be nearby this week so went and checked it out. The tubes were 10/10 as far as I could see. The hour meter had 1100hrs!!! Physical condition was just ok and seemed to project. So, now after reading about the 1209 vs. 1209s improvements, I wonder what easy upgrades I might do to improve it....only I get that monster up here to see it. I wonder if I could search out 1209/s boards to swap out with the 1209 boards. My guess is no but I wondered if anyone had any ideas. BTW, I got this baby for $1525....seems like a good deal to me.....LC 9" here I come!

Congratulations!
Incredible bargain. A great projector that I'm sure you'll be pleased with.

It was at a thrift store with starting bid of $1000 but virtually no information on its condition so I thought no one would bid on it. You can imagine my disappointment when I discovered someone had talked them into taking off the lenses to take pics of the tubes.
The only one I took off had a scratch on the lense from some piece of dirt getting between the C and the regular lens. Any idea how one might resmothe that. it is in the center and about 1cm long and 1 mm wide....

Barry,
Don't worry about it. Don't touch it!
You will only make it worse. It will have no effect on the picture quality.

I have been monitoring things on the MP pages but for my 1208/2 there were a lot of questions as to whether they would help much and I suspect since the 1209 is similar vintage the results will be similar....once I fire it up and figure out for sure what I have I will give it another run on MP Forum.

Upgrade to s isn't cheap, since pretty much all boards are different.
First step closer to s, would be red and green c elements. If that isn't enough for you, then you have two choice to make it better. Greg have ready solution for 1209 or if you are handy with electronics and have lot of time you can make it better yourself. I have bunch of tips...

Ile, would it be possible to change the glycol to accomplish this? Are c elements easy to obtain if not?
As for the electronics, I am an electronics engineer but I know how easy a simple project can turn to a very complex one as well so I tend to pick my battles carefully

C elements are easy to get in US, you can buy those from VDC or 3M.
This is for bellow model (1209s), but you get idea.

I changed out the lenses in my 1208 to HD-144s and there was a profound improvemtn in the color so I guess this is also in the cards. I hat having to take the tubes out though ugh....well it looks like my work is cutout but a lot easier thanks to the great How To link. Thanks Ile!

Here we are again.
1209 have set of boards (driver and neck cards) that Mikes Barco1 or Barco2 mods don't cover.
Whole non s 120* series fall in to same category.
This have been discussed in several threads since Mikes Barco mods started.
That add is misleading...

Ile,
I have been digging around on both VDC (sent info request as well) and 3M websites (lotta stuff there) but not found C-elements yet. I don't want to trouble you to do my research but if you happen to HAVE the url for C-elements let me have it. Otherwise I will do my due diligence and dig it up. Also, have you any idea how much they run?
You are right about MPmods. I asked the question months ago about black box meck boards for my 1208 and there is still no coverage for them.
But clearly the C-element is the first thing I need to deal with and get my colors straight.

Sorry, which ad?
Thanks Ile.
I'll contact Mike again to have him re-verify what models are supported and which aren't. I spent many hours wading through threads to figure out what projectors can take the mods and had Mike verify everything almost a year ago but obviously it's not right.

Barry | You should call to VDC, I have read that their email support isn't very good. Last time I heard they was dropped price back to $100/each.
I ordered from 3M, $150/each that time.
I pm'ed rep email address.

Kal | This old listing pretty much tell all you need to know.

D/G801s
D/G808
(+retros)
Are only ones that takes full Barco1 set of boards.
D808s is mix of Barco1 and Barco2, since it have 75MHz amps.
