Actually, it's a UHP bulb so it's not that bad.
Remember the bulb cost of the Qualia (Xenon)?

The king is NOT dead. He just resides on another plain of existance. I'm sure a lot of thought went into his decision. You all should respect that decision and get on with your own lives.
But damn, I wonder how much the replacememt lamps cost

He will put a hell of a lot less money into bulb replacement over three years than he would have spent on retubing the G90's.

I realize that Art knew about the bulb replacements going into this decision. But I don't think his G90's need retubing now - and knowing that he knows how to set up the G90's correctly, they won't need retubing in 3 years. So his expected retubing costs over the next 3-5 years are zero. But he will have to replace the digital bulb a few times in 3-5 years no matter how well the new PJ is set up. It's just part of owning a digital PJ.

I'm going to pick up his G90's next friday. I will post pictures here of the tubes. They have I think just under 3k hours on them.

GOD NO!!!!! I have a hard enough time keeping six tubes aligned!!!!!
Only one of the G90's I'm keeping. I'm not taking a chance on having a boat anchor on my ceiling.
Sadly, it's going to be a parts projector in case something in my stack fails.
I am though thinking about setting it up as a gaming machine in my computer room!

What size was Art's old screen, that he moved up to a 14' wide screen?
168" wide is pretty darn big. Will he be charging admission now?

He went to a Stewart Micro Perf 14ft wide Cinemascope screen with Motorized Masking. It's sweet.
Check out this pic:
I cant wait to see it. He just got it tonight.
The G90's come down next Friday, then it's a little ceiling work, screenwall work, cut a hole in the back of the room, and just a bit more sound and video tweeking. He's done.
It should happen really quick.
That projector (please dont shoot me down damnit!) is BAD ASS. Like looking at f*cking daylight in high APL. Just incredible and SHARP ASS HELL. It can ALMOST get TOO sharp for me at times when I saw it but it was not a distraction at all.
It POUNDED the stack in so many ways FOR THAT ROOM that it was sick. He'll be probably on a fresh bulb be pumping somewhere in the neighborhood of 21-22 foot lamberts.
For low APL and smaller screens though like mine in a small room it will light up the room so much that it would be distracting.
You would literally have to drape the ENTIRE ROOM with black velveteen (my room). It's that BRIGHT. Oh though too my eyes, wow. I never knew that they liked so much in your face ANSI and CONTRAST. Just sick.
Off to the theater. Time to watch some perfect high apl for my room and the best punch and blacks that CRT has to offer.
Tonight, it's 300. Finally get to watch this. Been waiting a long time..... 8)

I hope it's better than the JVC RS-1. That unit has crap "blacks", odd colors, and "digital motion artifacts" as I would call them.

Not everybody here realizes it (or is willing to admit it), but CRT's image quality has been eclipsed in many ways by digital. A lot of us here have CRT not necessarily because it offers the very best image quality, but because it offers the very best image quality at a price we can afford. I'd probably be one of those. No digital at any price I can afford or justify is anything I want to look at - especially when I can get a CRT that looks so much better in almost every way for much less money than I'd spend trying to achieve the same with a digital.
At the higher end of the market though, it's a whole different story. At that level, it becomes a game of tradeoffs... give up something here, get something back there. The biggie is trading superior absolute black level for superior ANSI contrast... which is NOT trivial any more than absolute black level is trivial.

I dunno about that. I havent seen the new "Macdaddy" dlp that everyone is raving about. But ive spent considerable time w/ the Sony Qualia, and the ruby. Other than brightness, i wouldnt trade either for a crt blendzilla setup.
Thats just my 2c. |
I was there the night Art decided he was going to the HT5000. Other than absolute black, it is one seriously incredible projector. It smoked the stack in everything but low APL.
I think he is going to be VERY happy with his decision. As far as the projector though, it better be kick ass for 50K retail.
Cliffy | Did you see any screendoor effect if looking at it from the first row close distance? Could you see individual pixels?
Screendoor is one big thing for me why I always preferred DILA's over DLP. But maybe they have solved that issue too?

I'll answer this after the meet. I need to see the final product.
