WEll I get that, and I get it depends how much time has elapsed between the last control module, etc. We all know that intermittents though are hard to find, so it doesn't sound like he's against trying, just discuss costs up front.

He's a mobile mechanic with a big truck stuffed full of tools (even has a brake lathe!). He lives about 50 miles from me. He's very good and always booked full. I'm not going to get any kind of a deal under those circumstances. He can't cut deals and make any money.

m.i.l. is the "check engine" or s.e.s. (service engine soon) lamp--fault codes relating to driveability may be stored in the on board computer that will lead to diagnostic flow charts allowing proper diagnosis, some codes do not turn on the lamp--has anybody done a scan test ??--what code(s) are showing ?? (most g.m. dealers will perform a scan test at no charge to better understand what type of appointment they may have to book--stop and see if they can/will do this for you and report any codes that are stored)

The "service engine soon" light sometimes comes on and stays on when I start it. The next time I start it it might be off again. 90% or more of the time it's off. The 2 times my mechanic worked on it his scanner indicated the ignition control module was bad. I think Auto Zone will also scan it for free. I'll try to get them to scan it next time I'm passing by one.

What about the VIM letters? What significance do they have?

Hi Phil
The service light coming on intermittently is frustrating,a bad sensor or harness fault will do this(The code reader should be able to pull all the codes in the memory even if the service light has gone out) I did a quick Google of problems for this van and this seems to be a" known issue" that usually means ...none of us can figure it out....
so, If I was there, the next few things I would check would be:

pull codes- go to autozone,or a garage and write down all the codes and find out what they are

the coil- disconnect the wires on the terminals and use a DMM to check the resistance value of the coil,I would do this cold-and again after it has warmed up. The fact that replacing the ecm helped, and that it is killing so many of them makes me think you have a bad coil (does it get REALLY hot after driving for a while?)

cold start injector- A few years back I worked on a Fiat that had a cold start valve stuck open- a previous mechanic had "tuned up" the car to allow for this extra fuel!! it was great when it was running but cold starts or very hot starts....not so much!
If your cold start is not switching on,it could leave you too lean for cold starts

intake leak- if this was an older carbed engine I would go over all the intake connections and gaskets, but with a MAF sensor you need to pull codes-if it is out of spec it could be a problem downstream causing a false positive on the MAF ( intake leak, plugged CAT converter, crimped tailpipe etc...)

Fuel pressure- I see a few references to the "octopus" having problems. don't even want to go there Mad

have a good weekend, hopefully not under the hood.

"octopus" could be a valid source of this concern, located under the intake manifold is one injector with pipes attatched delivering fuel to each cylinder, leakage or blockage could cause a suspect "ignition" fault by way of rather than having no spark when the fuel is ready there is no fuel when the spark is ready. scan tools used by mechanics do not "tell" what is wrong, they allow an interface either active or non active (code "reader") with the on board computers used in vehicles in order to perform tests and display certain system values used in conjunction with diagnostic flow charts that allow proper "trace to source" information (usualy writen by the vehicle engineers and edited for accuracy by the mechanics doing the repairs in manufacturers dealerships by way of the technical assistance desks). getting the "codes" and using flow charts (availible through various sources-mitchell/all data/ect) is your best bet. (vin-vehicle identification number digits help identify year and engine)

HEHE... A cold start injector is what I used for a long time to add fuel to my turbo cars.. (I use oversize injectors and burn my own chips these days Wink) They would run fine with the proper fuel mixture until "X" boost level at which a simple pressure switch would kick on the cold start.. On most of the 2.2/2.5 engines I played with would run lean about 15 p.s.i, of boost and then the first cold start would kick on.. BMW's,Fiat's Saab's, Volvo's, were all great sources for these parts.. Bosch had two different sizes of them.. One of them would provide enough fuel for a roughly 21 hp increase.. (or three pounds of boost) the other would give about a 14 hp increase or (about 2 p.s.i of boost..) With a series of these setup I could run almost 25-27 lbs of boost (controlled by very simple ball and spring check valve in the wastegate line)on a otherwise entirely stock engine...

So combined with the extra fuel, big exhaust and a larger intercooler (don't forget the diode in the map senor signal) ANY 2.2 T2 engine in sound mechanical condition could be cranking out 240-250 HP for about 200 bucks and an afternoon of tuning... The best part... They ran like a totally "stock" machine until the pedal was on the carpet...

LMAO....

All that being said I don't ever recall seeing a cold start on any GM branded products... It would seem odd to me that at 2000 Astro would still have an old school mechanical fuel injection system.. But hey.. I am not really a GM fan anyway.

But I wouldn't be surprised to find that Phil did have an injector stuck or plugged... Without an O2 signal the engine wouldn't even know or have the ability to compensate for a problem like that until the computer went into "closed loop" and then, and only then would it be able to compensate for something like that...

Is the 2000 Astro a TBI or MPI system?

oops , good point- if you can find a thermotime valve or sensor,it would be the "trigger" for additional cold start fuel.if the sensor is below a set temp. then it will open a circuit to allow additional fuel at cold start.

I'm not going to work on it for a while. Right now I need to get more listings on ebay for Christmas.

I'm still reading everyone's posts and will jump back into the thread once I have time to work on it.

Thanks for all the help!

Phil, I've got a shotgun and plenty of ammo if you get too frustrated. We can just take her out to an empty field and put 'er down. Wink

Phil,
I had a 90 Astro Van with 155,000 miles. Someone finally did me a favor and hit me during one of our ice storms. I donated the Van to Dallas Can academy, took the tax write off and used the insurance money toward a new vehicle. You might want to check to see what the Blue Book is, the tax break can be pretty good, plus they will come take it away.
