i cant seem to get a dcent picture from a canon powershot a580
i installed my screen and the picture just is amazing after a long setup and a quick g2 adjustment.
took me 6 hours in total but the colours are so amazing now on a screen i still cant believe it.
all the pictures are highly overexposed so much that the picture taken is hardly visible.
its not my camera so anyone who knows what settings to use i am all ears.

dvh,
If you're in an auto-exposure mode, you'll need to have to have the projected image nearly completely filling the frame of the camera, or else the camera will try to balance the exposure between the projected image and the vast black area surrounding it... Which, as you found out, doesn't work.
First, try the "Night Scene" mode (it's the icon on the mode dial that has a person, moon, and Eiffel Tower) and see if you don't get decent results. If not, then you'll have to go to "Manual" mode - the icon with the camera and "M", and adjust the exposure until the highlights just look about right. Don't worry about the shadows - you can't really capture the entire range.
Try to use roughly the middle of the lens' zoom range... i.e. not at the widest setting, nor at the longest zoom. That will usually be sharpest, and have the least amount of optical distortion.
Finally, use a tripod and the self-timer function (or a remote shutter release) so you aren't touching the camera when it exposes... No way to get sharp images if the camera isn't sitting on a solid surface.

To dvh99:
Are you sure you are not using the flash...
Just kidding.
As ecrabb mentioned, I would also try the M mode and adjust the exposure manually until you get the right result and don't forget to disable the flash
If you really want to capture the entire range then you can also do a bracketing on the exposition and then make an HDR picture!! You will have the full range of details of your beloved projector on picture Not sure that very useful but it's doable.

Dang, I had forgot that I made some very substantial changes and forgot to readjust the focus after those changes. So I spent some time this morning tightening up the focus. Was able to do very well with BLUE and RED, but found that I was not able to get the GREEN as tight as the RED and BLUE.
Anyway, I won't be able to deal with the green for now, so I've shot a few more shots with the GREEN not as good anyway.
