Hey guys,

I picked up an NEC XG135LC today. It powered on fine at the sellers place but at home it gives me a warning

"a fan has stopped"

and it shuts off after about 10 seconds and shows

"E0" on the back

I checked the error codes in the NEC pdf and it says "When the fan stops in the main body (abnormal)"

Please advise Confused

EDIT: I should add that the fan over the green tube and the fan near the ceiling/floor mount plugs are both spinning. But I didn't poke around anymore than that since it was late and I don't know how the chassis works yet.

I'm no NEC guy but if it worked just before you transported it, and assuming it didn't get dropped or handled by DHL, I'd hazard a guess that a connector has been jostled loose. The pj won't run because the fan is wired into a safety shutdown system. This keeps the thing from toasting itself from insufficient cooling if a fan fails.

Does the PDF have any pics of the connectors inside? Even if you can't find anything in the PDF, if it were me, I'd open it up and just check to make sure every connector you find is fully connected and seated securely.
I'm sure the NEC guys will be along to help out but while you're waiting it never hurts to make sure everything is connected and seated securely...it's usually best to do that even before powering it up after transport, even tho you may have just seen it working hours before.

Well, check all the fans are running.

There are:

3 fans under the tubes.

2 on one side, 1 on the other - behind the gills.

Def board fan

2 in the powersupply, just visible under the red tube.

And one above the lenses, one on the green neckboard - neither of which are on the fan protect circuit, so it isn't these.

I checked these-

3 fans under tubes - OK
2 on one side (1 draws air thru card cage right?) - these are both OK
def board fan (this is just beside the scan plugs right?) - if so OK

2 in PS - is the PS at the front below the lenses? I couldn't see any fans, not sure what to remove to get in there.

one above lenses- OK, one on green neckboard is OK, it has no yellow wire though

EDIT - found the 2 PS fans (looking from the side panel just under the red tube - both OK

So all the fans noted are spinning. Is that all of them? What should I check next?

Found this in AVS archives, sounds very similar. No apparent resolution either...

How do I perform a full EEPROM reset? IIRC, my PG had another passcode to get at a hidden set of options, something like 2470 (down the middle row).

I dropped the HTPC res to 800x600 (was at 1280x720 initially) and the fan errors stopped. So then I changed res's every 5 minutes or so to see if any triggered the fan stop again.

1024x768 fine
1152x864 fine
1280x768
1920x1080 fine (not badly resolved either at least in the 1080, 1920 lines were fuzzy in nokia)
1280x720 and...it's fine now

So I'm thinking corrupted memory block or something similar.

NO, don't do an EPROM reset. The fan control circuitry is on the HV board. I've had a few failures (intermittent usually) that cause fan shutdown errors on that board. If it creeps back, send me the board, I can repair it. This will NOT be an EPROM problem.

Ok. It has been running since my last post so changing res's seems to have fixed it for now.

I turned the XG off earlier and when I turned it back on it started happening again. So I checked the signal entry list and it had a few other entries at other refresh rates, which I think the pj was using rather than the entry I made. So I deleted those and the problem stopped. Seems like an odd cause for a false fan error.

If the fans are all working, then I reckon you have an intermittent fan connection on the HV board. Just unplug and replug them, and make sure none of the leads are taught.

A lead under tension on the HV board was giving me a Fd error recently.

The error popped up again when I turned it on today. I unplugged and replugged all the fans and the connector for the H.Def fan feels loose. So I pressed that down a bit and the error went away so that probably needs to be resoldered.

In case anyone ever reads this again-

One of the fan connectors was loose so I pulled the board out and resoldered it. Fixed permanently.
