|
|
I just bought a set of B, G and R tubes on eBay. The description is cryptic, but it's 100% clear that these tubes are for the BarcoReality 909. According to the seller, the tubes have been used for 2000 hours but the phosphor layer is like new. We'll see. At least I didn't pay that much, 'only' EUR 300 in total (something like US$400). I figured that if these are indeed P19LUG tubes, then it's still a good deal even if only the red tube is good. So now I'll keep my fingers crossed that there's no uneven wear on the tube surfaces...
Also, if there's smoke, then there's fire. So I've also asked what happened to the projector.
No, you won't find these tubes on eBay because it was a local listing, so the only way to find this set was to search through the eBay site of the country where the seller lives in.
To be continued!

Just got a message from the seller. Unfortunately, it appears that these tubes are from a Barco Reality 908 split-pack version. This means that the tubes are 8" and can be either LC or non-LC. If they are LC, then I smell a nice 1208s/2 LC conversion project (if the tubes are MEC)
I still hope the seller got confused, because the boxes stated "B909". Or he just got his numbers mixed up...
Well, I probably do not suck after all

That doesn't matter, as the auction does not have photos and the seller got his numbers pretty mixed up (808/809/908/909). I'll know more tonight, because the seller is going to send me the appropiate CRT numbers and photos.

Well, got some more information prior to receiving the photos. It appears that the BR908SP is still in use in a planetarium, and that it projects a digital sky. That means a lot of black and a low brightness. The tubes were changed when the defective SMPS was replaced. Not because the tubes had to be replaced, but because there was a budget to burn. This explains why the tubes are minty white. But I'll have to see that for myself.
The projector itself will be for sale in 3 years time. Needless to say that I had it reserved for me
The BR series should be a lot better than earlier Barcos. As R.Bauer stated on another forum: unlike almost all other projectors, the convergence and geometry on the BR and Cine 9 is a TRUE digital convergence. The Mitsubishi VS-1281e is another example of a CRT with digital convergence. I'm not sure about the Cine 8 (or derivatives).

So what makes it TRUE digital convergence?

Like R. Bauer wrote on another forum (sorry for the bad translation): with nearly all 'digitally controlled' CRT's, the convergence signal comes from an analog generator. This signal then goes through digitally controlled amplifiers/attenuators.
With the Cine 9/BR909 however, the convergence signals are generated in a DSP where the correction also takes place. Finally, the signal goes through a DAC before it goes through a convergence power amp. This essentially means that there is probably NO convergence drift at all.
Please bear with me, I'm no electronics engineer, but maybe Mike Parker can tell us more about this?

The new '9' series chassis from barco has DSP generated convergence signals which go through a DAC before going through the end-stages. No other projector I know of is designed this way, besides the mentioned mitsubishi.
The Cine8 is nothing more than a rebadged 808s with mec tubes and color filtered HD-8 lenses.

Yeah, I suck!
But wait, now on to the best part: I got an option on nine (!) BR908/909SP's, to be available in the next 3 years.
Do I still suck?
Now to find some hardware to convert my 1208s/2 into a 1209s/2 8)

So you found it
Now be kind to me and don't mail the seller... It took lots of research time for me to find those tubes! I'd appreciate it if you could remove the link.

Thanks Musty! I really appreciate it. Those who want to find the auction should try for themselves. It was hard enough for me to find those tubes and I don't want any auction interference Of course, this is one big family here, but like a saying in The Netherlands: don't tie the cat to the bacon

Wow... that must not translate well!
