|

Hello all!
I need some help! This is my first crt projector, (and my first projector period). I feel like the luckiest and unluckiest guy ever! Let me explain.
I bought a used 808s that was wasn't working for 60 euros. I got it home and figured I'd it up and see how bad it was in there and what errors it had. Once I opened it up to view the boards, I could not believe how clean it was! Next to zero dust, anywhere. This device, made in 97', look like it was made 3 months ago.
Powered it on and got all green lights on the G2 board and the red light too. Also had a red light on the v-board. No red light on the EHT. I looked through the forums and internet for a possible solution but no dice so far. I figured that I make a post, begging for help.
So, I have an 808s that is cleaner on the inside than the shirt I have on right now, that isn't working. There are no burned transistors anywhere. No real sign of use really. If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated! Maybe someone has a good v-board?
Anyways, thanks!

Can the tubes light up? Can there be a high voltage sound when starting up? If not, I suspect that the driver board is faulty.

You won't need a V board. Download the manuals from the site, and read my article. The red LED on the V light simply means the input signal isn't present, and the V board isn't locking to a signal.
You need to input a signal first, RGBHV with negative sync is preferred. Some 808s will display a menu without an input signal, many won't.
If you can hear the soft HV crackle at turnon, that's a good sign. If you get no HV crackle, then the fuse on the EHT board may be blown. If the EHT board isn't working, it's possible to get no HV< but the EHT LED won't be on either. The EHT light being on means the set has gone into shutdown mode, due to excessive HV, or excessive HV draw,. due to a shorted splitter, quadrupler or tube.

No tubes light up, but I hear sound when starting up. I'm not sure if its a "high voltage" sound, but it sounds like a device starting up. The Barco "turns off" after 3 "restarts.

I'm away from the Barco now, but I'll read more closely the manuals and articles. I'll be back to the Barco on Monday. I don't remember any light whatsoever on the EHT. I hear a normal sound at startup. I guess like a soft crackle. To me, it just sound like a device starting up. I was trying to use a composite video input first, just to get a picture. I do have some older consoles with component output. Being an American in Europe, I don't have alot of RGB output devices.
Also, are the fuses filled with sand or something like sand? I changed the fuse on the G2 board, hoping it would help, and I saw the white sand in the fuse.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

I think this is a typical driver board failure, which has happened before on my 808S.

Yes, the fuses are 'explosion proof' and filled with sand. If the red light on the G2 board is fine, then I'd expect the deflection (H and V) boards to be OK. HOWEVER... the set shutting off after 3 restarts is an indication of a fault in the set, which is why it won't restart. It could be as simple as a stuck keypad button though, if the power one is stuck 'on', then the set can do that. Or the failure could be elsewhere. I'd try inputting a signal first before anything else.

Ok. I'm still working on a source input. Luckily, my nvidia shield outputs vga, (via hdmi to vga cable), so I ordered a vga to RGBHV cable from Amazon to try as a input source. I did try composite video from my PS2 with no luck tho.

No luck or changes on the Barco. Used a working source on the RGBHV input with the same results; red light on the G2 board, red light on the v-board, and a 3 shut downs. Anymore ideas anyone? Thanks!

Could be also possible that one of the scan switches does not lock in position, due to that poor designed springloads.
While projector is off and no power cord attached, remove the horizontal and vertical boards. On the mainboard you can see four big switches, three next each other for the horizontal scan inversion, and further on the right, one for the vertical scan inversion. For front-table configuration, all four switches must be pushed in. For front-ceiling configuration, all switches must be released. So depending on how they are now, just reverse them all.
Take a look at section 4.2 of the installation manual, if you are not sure about the location.
Than put the H anv V boards back in and give it a try....

Yeah, I tried that too. I found that section of the install manual and took a look at the boards. The positions were all mixed up and I was hoping that was the issue. Sadly, it didn't change the outcome.

I have boards you can have for next to nothing but shipping from Canada won't be cheap. Check the classifieds and send me a message if you want.

Thanks! I have access to a US APO mailbox as well as my Germany address. Plus, it's better than having a 150lb non-working projector.

Hey everyone! Just a quick update: I was able to pick up some extra boards from ElTopo here in Germany and it turns out, it was the V-board that was the issue. Once I put the new board in, I was able to see I picture from the 808s.
Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions!
