An 88 error code usually means a bad YA board, and not necessarily a bad Dallas chip, or programming on it. Put the original Dallas chip in, but pull the CRT sockets off the back of the tubes, so that they don't turn on. See if the set will power up then. If so, then you have a programming problem with the Dallas chip, but if you still get the 88 error, then the YA board is bad, and Craig Rounds in Chicago is the only guy that can repair it.

Okay I can definitely try this out!
After doing a lot of research I found this post: http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=82504#82504. That led me to believe that maybe fireware could be the problem/solution.
I'm pretty disappointed things didn't work out with the Dallas swap. It's too bad there doesn't seem to be any info out there about repairing YA boards. :/ I'm generally a complete DIYer.
Sending in for repair sounds very expensive, and I fear it will price me right out. I hope that guess is wrong? Despite the condition of the tubes, it doesn't feel safe to sink a lot of money in to a repair for a unit this old with no availability of replacement parts.
Always wanted a g90 and thought I really scored on this one... Maybe not?
😔

I shot him an email. I really hope the repair is something I can afford.

I can't speak for him, but I think usually $500-1000 USD. There's no other option.

3–7 times what I paid for the projector. Oof. That stings.
I've always wanted one, but that might lead me to seeing if someone wants these brand new tubes and parting it out. 😔

If you're patient, I'll bet you could find a G90 chassis in good shape with toasted tubes. Cheap or free. Probably local in the Bay area so you don't have to ship it.

I've considered this exact prospect! Lol
But I've been looking for one in the bay for a long time, and this is the first one to pop up.

You're already in trouble. The C elements are bubbled, indicating the lenses were pointed at the sun while moving it. You need to source those as well now.
Or, is that a phone flash reflection?

Just a flash(light) reflection! It was in it's original box when moved, lens caps on and all! Those are rough to photograph! Lol did the best I could to aim a flashlight at one side, snap a pic , then the other, snap a pic.
The tubes look absolutely pristine. No wear pattern at all.
Good to know I better keep them away from the sun though!

No worries! Lol
You got any tips on getting a complete Pic of these tubes with even lighting? Lol
Seemingly not wheel it into the sunshine...

Definitely not. Full sunlight, with the lenses on, can fry the C-Element in seconds.

Ha, they are still trying to get stupid prices for their g90 stuff. THey bought out the US inventory of stock probably.. 20 years ago, and advertised the projectors for $20K USD+ on eBay for years. Finally dropped the price again and again. I know they sold some projectors, and I'm assuming that their freight costs from Sony were probably more than what they paid for the inventory in the first place.

Craig Rounds is your guy. If you don't want to pay his repair prices, then at this point you're probably stuck. There simply aren't boards available.

I wrote to craig on the 12th. Since then I'll also tried him on ebay and through the form on his site. Hopefully he gets back to me eventually. It didn't seem like I'd hear back so I started exploring other options before I give up.

IT'S ALIVE!!!
I'm feeling pretty elated right now TBH.
Especially since I never heard back from Craig anywhere I reached out to him, I just kept trying to figure it out for myself. And eventually, WE GOT IT!
SO! Here is the update to tie a bow on my particular repair, and to maybe help another with this issue!
I had a very kind and smart buddy help me out with this over our local discord.
We tried various things. I inspected the whole board with a microscope looking for cracked solder (not uncommon from PCBs of this vintage, shortly after the switch to lead-free solder), and I did continuity/short checks for all the chips responsible for the boot. No issues found there, on to the next thing...
After pouring over the service manual... We finally realized bad ram (ICs 235 & 236) was more than possible. Especially since I noticed on various shots on the web different vintage ram chips in use (notably on Craig's eBay shots). This would be the first time bad ram fixed some old tech for me, or my buddy on Discord. So I tracked some NOS ram chips down from eBay.
Today I finally worked up the guts to get out the Chipquik and work those old chips off. I went slow, and it went fairly smoothly. Getting the new chips on was tricky. Drag soldering on those SOJ chips is a PAIN. The answer, as always, MORE FLUX! I got them on and looking good eventually.
Then in the board went. I held my breath, and flipped the switch.....
ERROR 30. Well that's new! What's that mean? Found the relevant page in the manual, and oh! Requesting to format the user area! The old Dallas was probably long dead, so no surprise there. I still had it in from the last check when Curt had me put it back in and unplug the tubes.
New Dallas goes in and back into the chassis. Error 30 again. Good. Depress S202, and 31 flashes, error screen cleared....
Press the power button and.... IT BOOTS!
I've got more testing to be done here, gotta plug the tubes back in and see if the other ram chips have failed too (same chip and vintage), they are part of the internal pattern generator so if the internal patterns work, I'm good. If they don't, glad I ordered 6 chips instead of two.
TL/DR: got a G90 with an error 88? It might be bad ram at ICs 235 & 236. The chips aren't that expensive, so be very careful, but try swapping them out!
