So I'm getting ready to try this:http://www.curtpalme.com/CLR_Defungus_Sony_Tubes.shtm on my new vph-1042q.

I have just a couple of follow up questions.

1. Is filtering the glycol to reuse it not okay?

2. What is a good source for fresh glycol today?

3. What about tinting? My green and red tubes are both use tinted glycol. I imagine that can't be easily found, so what ink should I use and how accurate do I need to be? Is this kind of just an eyeball it situation?

4. Does anybody have recommendations for the syringe to be used, or maybe a plastic tipped syringe I can use in place of compressed air?

I'd get new stuff. I think MCM Electronics still make it. Very few manufacturers used tinted glycol, the larger Sony 12XX sets did, that's about the only place you'll find it, is out of an old tube.

ANy kind of air pressure in the one hole, to blow the coolant out of the other will do. I used to tip the tube upside down, then found the compressor was a lot faster (and messier!) Smile

Okay, so how do I tint the new stuff, and do I just eyeball it?

Tinting glycol is one of them.

Note that if you have an liquid coupled projector it's the c-element that's tinted, not the glycol.

Oh cool thanks. I'll maybe try filtering it first to see how that goes. Although for the blue tube it's easy, cause it's not tinted and is the worst offender!

I was initially asking about general practices, but I guess this got sorta specific so I updated the title with the unit in working on. Sony VPH-1042Q.

Ok, so a very old unit, so definitely doesn't have c-elements let alone tinted c-elements. May or may not have tinted glycol. Not sure what they came with originally.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with perfection given the age and the limits around the projector you're using. You could also go completely untinted and it may not be that bad. YMMV. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I'm not worried about perfection at all, but the blue tube is absolutely riddled with crystals. The red looks very cloudy. The tube condition looks fantastic though, so that's a big plus! I think I'll just try filtering and see how it goes. Seems low risk. If I'm not pleased with the results, I'll buy some ink and swap em all out!

No just 2 1040's. The bottom windows were JVC DILA projectors. Also have a pair of 12xx series SONY's there. a 1272 and a 1251 I believe.

Here's where I used the 1272 because it can do black not like a digital blocking light with its panel:

This is green tube on only so the RGB alignment wouldn't affect anything because the Scrim ( screen ) was blowing in the wind a little causing the beams to go into 3 RGB shadows. Solution was to turn off the red and blue tubes.

BTW this was after the rain leaked into the top keypad on the projector. Fortunately I had a roll of blue shop towels and a Honeywell fan with me. Wink

it didn't stop raining the whole time from 4pm on-wards. Didn't loose a single piece of equipment.

I use allot of JVC's now. I picked up a bunch from Disney World surplus as well as 3 or 4 more before that some c. 1999-2000. and some c.2005-2006
