Hello Very Happy

during my ebay browsing I repeatedly see offer of this projector:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/122776368235?mkcid=1&mkrid=707-53477-19255-0&siteid=77&campid=5337600554&toolid=20008&mkevt=1

It is a caligrapgic-crt projector used for simulation. I am curious about it, but unfortunately I didn’t find much technical information. So questions stands:

1) What is the specification of this projector? HScan, VScan, bandwidth.
2) In what regards it is different and superior to Barco 1209s?
3) Which components are shared with classic CRT projectors like 1209s, Cine 9, 909?
4) I started my interest in CRT projectors mainly because of gaming (no response, no motion blur, possibility of improving and gaining more refresh rate than at CRT monitors), beside watching movies. It is Barco 7120a usable in this way? If not, are there any possible modifications to be so?

Thank you

Hypno

Projectors for simulators tend to use extremely specialized lenses that only work on very curved screens, tubes are usually toast due to odd wear pattern. Some will also have changed circuitry just for simulators.

Yup

These used LUG tubes but in "stoplight"" mode, you can't lay it flat and watch it. Parts are non-existent.

I bought one of those for $150.. and $500 shipping to get it to me. Insanely complex unit, missing all 3 tubes, needed 220 volts to run on. I threw it out. Smile

I read the thread, interesting. How far must be the screens curved? I guess it has to be at least a bit adjustable. Until some level of curve it would be acceptable for games.
It is possible to change the lenses for HD120 for example? The mounting of lenses seem different to BG 1209s and already not straight, but I am judging just from photo.

Power supply and getting there video signal is another story, except of other things. But would it be possible to do some hardware adjustment to get it working? Very Happy I mean the people of your knowledge and experience, or Greg Eismann.

No idea, but it's usually pretty extreme.

Again, no idea.

You can certainly try anything you like, but keep in mind that board level techs like Curt threw out units like this and they have (or had) every CRT board and part in existence in the world. That should give you some idea of the success rate you should expect. Wink

Use the forum search feature for previous discussions on CRT projectors used in simulators. You'll find tons of discussion that goes back years. Usually the exact same questions as you when someone finds something available for sale for cheap (or free) and is wondering how to make it work for regular HT use.

This was the unit used for projecting the HUD and the bad guys wasn't it?

They are for "level D" flight simulators. Typically 3 of them arranged on the top of the sim, firing onto the screens, which is why they are vertically oriented. These projectors do a vector (calligraphic) scan in the vertical interval to highlight certain things to bring more realism to the image.

Say, if you were doing a landing in an B744 sim from the 90s, things in the projected image you might see like runway lighting would be brightened by the vector scan, since it can slow the beams over the phosphor for a longer period of time.

It's an interesting effect that you kinda need to see in person.
