BTW, what do you guys think about Barco's claim on their sales blurb on that ebay listing that the human eye can only recognize contrast ratios of 800:1 maximim?

I'm calling BS.

For one thing, it's defiantly going to vary with brightness. The difference between 800:1 on a 30,000 lumen projector and a 1000 lumen one is enormous.

More importantly, they're talking about the full on / full off ratio which isn't really measuring contrast. It's a measure of black levels and almost everyone can recognize better blacks on projectors with full on / full off ratios well beyond 800:1.

This reminds me of college in 1997....A group down the hall in the dorms were playing with Fresnel lenses, cardboard, and black cloths while flipping tv's upside-down. They thought this blurry image was the coolest thing ever.
