Tom the JVC NX7 (aka RS2000) is an insanely great projector at the price point. You should check it out. The contrast ratio is really good, it throws tons of light, most units can do full DCI-P3, field uniformity is generally excellent, and they are just wonderful.
MSRP is like $9K, but in the real world they are MUCH cheaper. If you told me five years ago you could get a new projector that is top notch (as long as your screen isn't huge) and this good I would never have believed it. The only sube $100k projector that looks better is the NX9 and it's not much better. The NX7 even beats the RS4500.
The Sony cost 2x, 3x, and 5x more and are not as good. Other than that, nobody else is making theater grade projectors anymore for the consumer level.

Don't let the Sony fanboys hear you say that including your neighbor Joerod. They accused Kris Deering of manipulating the pjs at John's shoot out event last year. IIRC Kris even said that you made sure everything was on the up and up.
Interestingly in Europe the Sonys are priced more competitively. I have always laughed when the Sony reps say how many points they are giving to justify their higher prices in the US.

At the shootout this past Spring that I helped with we actually took the 695 out of the show because it was contouring so poorly we thought that it had to be broken and didn't want to misrepresent the Sony's capabilities. I'm aware of the accusations form the previous shootout before this year's, but it is all just silly. The profit margin is sooooo much higher on Sony for dealers than on the JVC that it just doesn't make sense for a dealer to WANT to sell JVC over Sony. Misrepresenting the Sony's at a shootout being held by a dealer just doesn't make sense to do from the bottom line. It's all a bunch of hogwash.
The other thing about the Sony's is that the field uniformity is really hit or miss and it's a miss about 85% or the time. They are just terrible on filed uniformity many of which are so bad that it's easy to see in moving real world images. I could never live with it.
Oh and bad news for you Eric, my little sister got married a few months ago

Interesting, I have never heard that the uniformity was that bad percentage wise. I know there are issues, but that revelation would blow peoples minds.

If you talk to Kris, ask him about field uniformity, it drives him more nuts than me.
Eh, shes all right I guess

Is the uniformity issue applicable to the Sony 885 and 895 laser pjs too?

You mean the 885 and 995? Yes, Sony has been plagued by this for years. The 5000's tend to be better, but they are still not great.
Don't get me wrong, all the Sony laser projectors are great, but we have gotten to such a high standard now that to me it's totally unacceptable at the price point they command. I mean the RS1000 has very good uniformity and lists for what $6k. The 995 has about the same color gamut as the RS1000 (DCI-P3 is way under saturated) and lists for $35k, but includes terrible field uniformity. What gives?

Ooops yes 995. Thats totally unacceptable on a $35K projector. And odds of getting a good example are so low. Seems like image issues have been ongoing in the Sony range for decades. I vaguely remember similar discussions about the vpl-w400 (my first foray into digital HT pjs in the 90's) before I caught the CRT bug.
