Ya know, I figured the scam would work for maybe 2 years when I heard about it way back when, in the 80s I think. But noooooo, years later the technology has changed, so have the speakers, but people are as ignorant about audio than they ever are.
However, when it comes to installations, everyone knows a pro that's a friend of a second cousin twice removed that's a DJ!

OK just confess Curt ...... Will you take a hundred for the speakers ?
The scam looks like it is getting better though, they have gone 5.1 and actually are in a manufactured box .
The guys selling those are only small time , If they were more organized and wanted to really maximize the scam they would have stamped BOSE on them.

They also have to get a better box; to me the flames and graphics just scream "POS"

I especially like the P.S. at the bottom:
"it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests"
I wonder how many "contacts" he got by people who wished they were the first.

the white van looks cool?
so we run towards it...and we can't refuse to buy these large boxes ?
it amazes me how much power one can pack in such a small volume...

FYI: That's not something the poster wrote... that's put at the end of every craig's list posting (you check off a box if you want to allow others to contact you or not). Everyone says "no" of course.

I like to think the concept of deception works as well as politics. Why do people let morons into the office to screw up the system?

There are some folks who cant resist the allure of a "deal".
They really think they are getting something for nothing.

People who buy them are essentially the same as people who buy BOSE speakers.
Either way, they're ignorant about quality audio. But the Bose buyers THINK they know something.
So a person can be more readily forgiven for buying white van speakers than Bose speakers.

There is nothing worse than someone that you know (not someone you hate or dislike) bragging to you about their Bose system. Because of the good natured relationship, you cannot inform them otherwise. Then again, they are examples of ignorance is bliss. Luckily for me they have not tried my subdivision, because if they had they would be treated the same way those tractor-trailer furniture sellers are treated, with me using the cell phone to take a picture, and then the police call goes out.

Yeah, my best friend was going to buy a set of BOSE in-wall speakers. I simply told him that the "experts" in the forums didn't think much of them, but if they sounded good to him, that is what he should go for. That, at least, prompted him to listen to some other brands. He ended going with Polk in-walls - he said they DO sound better. I haven't heard them yet - he is out of state - but I'm glad I was able to open his eyes a little bit.
Not sure that you can do much of an in-store listening comparison to in-wall speakers, though.

I've sold piles of Bose, and here's why:
-massive profit margin
-large product recognition
-they work well in some venues.
As my sales guy that was a big Bose seller once said to another sales guy at his old job: 'Why spend 1/2 hour trying to sell a customer a Polk sub/satellite system that costs less money when the customer is ready to buy the more expensive Bose system that wil net you more commission anyways?'
My instinct as an audio guy would also tell me to push the Polk, but you can only stand on a soap box for so long. Fortunately my CRT soapbox is built well and I've conned a bunch of people into buying them. Oh wait....

That's not a soap box you're standing on Curt, it's a pork barrel.

All I do in a situation like that is take them by my place and let my "big system" rip for a while. Then they truly
understand that their estimation of what good sound is, has to date had no resemblance to the truth.
(Incidentally, Krell KMA-160 monoblocks driving Aerial Acoustics 10Ts are the "business end" of my system.)
