Hi,

While manipulating a Sony VPH-1044 CRT projector, one of the front glasses of the tubes cracked.

What I did was to carry the projector tilted 90º on my arms to be able to pass through a narrow door. Maybe the lens touched the glass applying a strong force on one side of it, and caused the crack. The coolant remains withing the chamber while the projector off. If I turn it on it starts dripping from the crack. It is a vertical crack in the middle of the glass which causes a very annoying effect on that particular color but anyway i can't use it like that because the coolant starts dripping..

The question is, can I replace this glass with any regular glass I can buy in any glass store?

Here in Argentina there are no spares for almost no vintage stuff, so no chances of getting an original glass from anywhere.

Yes

If you can have the shape and thickness of that glass duplicated. You might be left without the antireflective coating but you have few other options. Clean all surfaces of old adhesive and install your new glass, black RTV silicone is probably best. Allow 48 hours for RTV to cure. Put it in the sun to speed that up. Get fresh glycol if possible, and a big syringe to load it with.

Someone here might have a dead tube to send you.

Put up a separate post to see if anyone still has an 07MS tube left. I threw all mine out years ago, but that might be cheaper than getting new glass cut. As Tim says though, that's totally doable too.

I had some glass on some 6PG tubes crack for no apparent reason, they were just sitting in storage. Seemed really strange.

Curt it hurts to hear that you had a lot of them but not anymore

If nothing shows up I will have to go for the custom glass solution.

Do you have recommendations from now on related to why this happen and how to avoid it? Should I add some space between the optics and the tubes?

Have you bled the coolant to see if it's under pressure? Over time water can slowly accumulate in the coolant and increase the pressure on the glass. This can cause cracks to happen randomly. You should probably pull the other two tubes and make sure there is no pressure by opening a filler screw. Also, put a small air bubble in there when you put the filler screw back.

Thanks for all your tips.

Due to lack of time and also because I am a bit afraid of doing it I still haven't removed the cracked glass out from the CRT.

Just in case I would like to ask again if somebody has a glass and is willing to send it to Argentina. If not, is this a somehow special glass appart from the coating? Can I use any regular glass I can get in any glass shop used for windows or tables? We don't have spares here or special products so my options are limited to an extreme.

I really want to be able to use the projector again after sooo much work disassembling the lenses completely (which was a real nightmare) to take apart the 5 interior lenses and remove the water between them (it was not condensation, they were exposed to rain and sun for months). I still can't believe it works perfectly.
I was just able to watch one video and then boom... Taking it from one room to the other handling it tilted 90º to make it pass through a door it craked! :(

I wonder if the lens assembly was just too close to the glass and it cracked becaus the metal assembly pressed against the crt.

Hi, I'm in Australia, I've got a couple of dud SD187 tubes which use the same glass as an 07MS as far as I know. I've never tried, but I think you can separate the face glass from the rest of tube by cutting it away with a sharp knife. How to do that was covered on the site somewhere at one time. I can send one or both if you're prepared to pay the cost. In saying that, postage out of here is pretty expensive. It's been a while since I logged on. If you're still looking, let me know.

Hi all,

I reopen this old topic because I'm in the same situation.

I've bought a new refreshed VDC 180DVB22 for GB808.
It was cheap because the front glass broken during the transport. The glycol is still inside.
I thouht to change the glass using one of another one almost dead tube.
But I cannot take out the glass.
I removed the glycol and cut all the black silicone around but is still very strong to remove.

Do you have to heat up something ?

Anyway not an easy task with a 180DVB22.
The glass is not flush with the frame.

Not designed for easy service. You may try soaking the silicone in vinegar, That may soften it as well.

Hello, i have a full set of 07MS tubes with barco yokes (red and green in very good, blue in bad shape phosphorwise)
and a set of three very good 180DMB22 tubes from a marquee 8500 ultra.
Tubes are in Germany.
