The original idea is actually from Barco. The retro models and the L-block models have the convergence drawer underneath the main board. The main board and the convergence drawer are connected with a U board which you can actually see on one of the photo's. In this case the space between the convergence board an motherboard was a bit too much for the original Barco U connector, so I made two of them myself. Real easy, as you can see. Just check all solderings for short-circuit, as you have many joints to solder.

The idea of a split pack is a good one,
I have a couple of spare chassis for 1209/1209 units so I did think about this........
MY trouble was that i would need a large distance between electronics and tubes - say 10-12 foot, I was concerned about issues that might cause whilst trying to create a silent PJ in the HT room.........
The very modular design of the Barco does give a good starting block....

So what are the elements that generate heat and need cooling? Is it the tubes primarily or the other electronics that theoretically could be isolated?

The CRT is directly above the (future) couch. Behind the couch there was a need for open floorspace between the couch and the kitchen ('workbench' in the last shot) to walk through the room. Now you don't bump your head when walking/standing behind the couch. Lowering the projector allows for a comfortable screen height.
The project isn't finished yet. A nice enclosure will be made around the projector.
He also could have opted for the JVC HD-1, but he decided to keep the CRT simply because it is better. And now it is better integrated into the livingroom.

HUH? With a comfortable screen height, the back of the PJ is over 6'2" off the ground (that is with the screen around 28" off the floor).
The reason I see is aesthetics--it can now be enclosed in a smaller less obtrusive hushbox. Definitely well done though.

Can't the 1209s handle a bit of tilt and keystone? You could have mounted it higher, above head-bonk range, and tilted it down to achieve the desired screen height. Maybe not optimal, but geeze, cutting your 1209s apart...

I think that's really neat! Great job Robbo!
Most CRT PJs are hung a ways from the ceiling, so a lot of HTs would have room for this mod without lowering the bottom of the PJ. Robbo reduced the foot print of the PJ, so now the hush box will be taller but not near as long. I bet that will look pretty good! Can't wait to see pics of it!

1 year / 1700 hours later, and still running smoothly 
Making a hushbox hasn't happened yet, but it did do some panelwork and finished the backend in style:
Still need to fit the fastlock springs. When those are fitted, it will also be possible to quickly open the cover to the tubes, like the original casing.

Very nice! Glad to hear it's still running as well too.
You know, when you posted this last year I thought you were crazy for cutting this thing in half. But now that I think about it some more, the only way I'd ever be able to fit a Cine9/1209s/909 in my HT would be to do the exact same thing because of the extra throw required as compared to my current Barco Cine8 Onyx.
Hmmm.....
