What onslaught? It's hardly an onslaught when there's only like nine people left who are still watching CRT.

I sometimes run a real low budget Sanyo digital and like the sharp picture and simple set up, but the washed out blacks are awful and it sure lacks the depth and almost life like imaging of my little Runco 980.

You guys do realize that there are 100s, maybe 1000s more that don't look or post at this forum? While I don't count on CRT to pay the mortgage any more, I still do daily business selling parts and doing repairs. There are a pile of customers that I hear from once in a blue moon that I sold a set to over 10 years ago that are still going strong, and as many customer that upgrade from Sony 12XX series (doing an install locally next week for exactly that).

While a bunch of US military Marquees have been dumped in the last year or two, there's still far more in service that probably will never hit any auction website, as lots of places are under orders not to sell off anything as surplus, it goes right to the jaws of destruction. Sad

Yep, I know that there are a lot of users out there still. I am just yanking the chain. Fortunately, they last and still put out a great image.

On your second point, I know you are still upset about a certain stash that you will never be able to touch. Wink

TV/Projector: All of them!

Nah, not at all. Other than the Marquees, and the 15 sets I bought parts off of in Seattle last week, I haven't bought anything. More is getting stripped today.

I'm headfirst into high end reel to reel repairs and sales. While sound is my main business, and I'll support CRT for as long as there is demand, I can't keep up with RTR service, I could turn it into a full time business if I wanted to.. Case in point, the last one I sold:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/351659641630?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649

I will add this about mods though: While I do believe that many mods can improve the performance of CRT from stock, be it Mike's mods, or Dragan's, or whomever, I do not think that CRT is going to make a big comeback like vinyl has. Stockpiling new old stock sets makes absolutely no sense to me, and even if someone can tighten up the beam spot and up the scan rate so that CRT can do 4K, other than a few die-hards, I really don't think that anyone is going to jump ship from a 4K digital to a 4K CRT. Prove me wrong! Smile

Damn, Curt! That is awesome.

Well, I have gotten an earful on mods from Rocco, so I will refrain from commenting on them. Laughing

CRTs aren't going to make a comeback. For every person that switches from digital to CRT, there is probably ten going the other way. Kurt can say or do whatever he wants, but nothing is going to change that. Fortunately for him, he has the money to burn for this pursuit.

Which is unfortunate, as he and Kurt are vying for the title of "Owner of the largest number of privately owned Marquee projectors in the world" Now we can't keep up with each's progress.

Last time I talked Kurt he was at 22 9500LC Marquee 1 Ampro 4200 and 1 Sony G90. I do begin to think he might have enough to last his lifetime and then some :D

LOL, the difference being that Kurt thinks he can make money off of them. I think Steve wants two good pjs with a couple of spares to last him the next decade.

The investment in infrastructure required to restart CRT production would be epic. I would be pretty sure that MOST of the specialized tooling required to even form the glass envelopes has been scrapped already.

CRT is in the retirement home. It's not coming out except for burial.

I freely acknowledge that, even as I myself am one of the more dedicated enthusiasts who is putting forth the effort to push a CRT projector into the UHD range. I can't say I'm the leader of such a movement, but I'm invested in the development of it in a way that nobody else is.

There was ONE set of 9" ultra resolution tubes made for the Marquee HR project. I own them. I fully intend to see what their outer limits are. If any projector can achieve 4K, the one I'm about to start building will be the front-running candidate.

And I'm not going to make a penny off it.

But I will enjoy the experiment. Be sure of that.

He is in it for the best picture possible and pushing the crt envelope.

.Maybe he will someday dump them back onto the market but he is more interested in setting up his friends with nice afordable projectors. Why do you speculate about that?

I heard it through the grapevine. Wink

No big deal either way. If he wants to give them to friends, then more power to him.
