Hi,

I'm a new French CRT owner and a complete newbie... Smile Excuse my bad English...
My actual configuration is :

- a dedicated room (26'x14')
- a painted 16/9 screen (base of 110")
- a tri-lcd full hd Panasonic projector
- a 7.1 sound system (DENON+NAD+DAVIS)
- an A/V server + BLURAY+DVD

I picked up a Sony 1292, a Sony 1272, a BARCO BG808, a NEC 6PG+. The four projectors are in good/really good condition with 2000-2500h tubes.

I want to install the 1292 or the 808 and I've got some questions :

1/ Does the 1292 really deliver a better image with his 9" tubes? I've changed all the fans (Noctua).
2/ I must put the projector on the floor (on a support). My screen begins at 3' from the floor and I can install the CRT at the most at 12' (extremity of the lenses) of the screen. Does this setup seem possible?

3/ I've never install a CRT and have no electronics skill, just thorough knowledge in audio/video. Do you think I'm able to make a complete setup of the 1292 or 808?

4/ Is it better to use an Optoma HD3000 scaler or a PCHC?

Thank you for your advices and answers.

Best regards.

Though the Sony 1292 is a bit old machine, but It should deliver the best picture from the given group.

There is some learning curve with CRT setup, but we all started once, from zero knowledge Wink

Fortunately Graham Johnson's CRT setup DVD is now freely available:

This video shows a Sony 1292 for setup (good for you), the general method matches for all CRT projectors though.

Thanks gjacky!

I'll watch Graham Johnson setup guide as soon as possible. Hope I can undertand all the guy is saying...

I've got the possibility to buy a BG808s with tubes in good condition at a low price. Is it a better choice than the Sony 1292?

Best regards.

I think the 1292 would be better in most ways. 9" LC coupled tubes big role in this, also the 1292 has factory color filtering, a BG808s have none of this, although the 1292 is considered the noisiest CRT projector ever made.

Ok, thanks.
The noisest, yes... I've changed the fans and I'll try to make a hushbox that can be used as a coffee table.

If the 808s has P16 or P18 tubes I would grab it.

808s uses Sony tubes, adding the HD145 form the PG6+ to the barco would make it better, but then it would be still an AC machine.

I have 5 x 808s projectors with P16 and P18 tubes. They are the SEOS version so maybe that is why.

Hi,

Ok. I'll examine the 808s. Thanks for the informations. I'm here to learn as much as possible about CRTs.

First of all, I have to install the 1292, if it's possible with my configuration...

Merry Christmas to you all!

Hi guys,

First off all, best wishes for the New Year!

I've got a problem... Laughing

I'm trying to install my Sony 1292 and I don't understand all the protocol.
The dimensions of my 16/9 screen are 2500mmx1410mm.

I've found this in the projector manual :

"The screen size is the diagonal length of the screen in inches, while the aspect ratio of the screen is 4/3" OK.

Seen mmy screen is a 16/9 I have to follow this : "Screens with an aspect ratio other than 4/3". And the manual gives 2 situations :

- "when the height is greater : calculate the approximate screen size from the screen height as shown below. Install the projector and screen in accordance with the screen size obtain" The formula : screen size (inches)= (height (mm)x5/3)x 1/25,4.
-"when the width is greater (my situation I suppose...) : calculate the approximate screen size from the screen height as shown below. Install the projector and screen in accordance with the screen size obtain" The formula : screen size (inches)= (height (mm)x5/4)x 1/25,4.
But if I follow this formula, I obtain (1410x5/4)x1/25,4, that is 69 inches!!!!!! And I don't understnad this result. The diagonal of my screen is 113 inches...

Thanks for your explanations.

Best regards.

Hi,

I have the solution...
There's an error in the formula. Using the width in the second formula, I obtain the good result.

Have a nice day.

Bye.
