Hi All,
Have been really enjoying the VP30 i bought from Jeremy112 close to a year back, up til this past weekend.... i have the optical audio output from the VP30 feeding my old Sony ES non-HDMI AVR and when i fired things up i got this awful static hash of sound out of the receiver at high volume.
Cycled the power on both components and checked that settings were still correct (they were) but i now get no sound at all...just some brief audible clicks as i switch HDMI inputs on the VP30. As a test I tried using the Coax out from the VP30 to the Sony but that doesn't work either so the finger is mostly pointing at the VP30.
Any insights / fixes appreciated...
(no i haven't checked the Vp30 outboard power supply but it doesn't appear bad given everything else works on the box and the video over HDMI is perfect).

Hi,
Working on the VP30 could be tricky as schematics and service manuals don't seem to be available. Instead you could use a simple HDMI audio extractor (should cost around $20-40) and plug it into the VP30's HDMI output. You will need a version that passes through the video signal, of course...

Dave, Couldn't you just run your optical from your source to your AVR? I never used the audio feature on the VP30 myself, I used coaxial or optical for most of my audio, I never used the HDMI for audio even though my AVR supported it, just never had the need.

Well thanks all for your suggestions and insights. The good news ( for now ) is that it's working again.
I first tested the SONY 's optical digital inputs from a CD player and they all worked perfectly. Then, I cracked open the vp 30 power supply all looked good inside , putting out a healthy 6.15 VDC. Then I just did a hard reset on the VP30 and lo and behold the digital out works again.
It's actually a great solution to use that digital audio out because it saves me running multiple optical cables to my Sony , which I can leave with a single input selected and do all the switching with the vp30. The Sony just acts as a multi channel decoder-amplifier.

HDMI audio extractor is quite good and efficient in output. I am using it.

Update a couple of weeks later - the static noise is still re-occuring every once in awhile, usually when i first power on the Sony AVR / VP-30 combo ( the VP30 being powered by a switched outlet on the Sony). But it always clears up by power cycling the combo again. I might try eliminating the switched outlet in favour of leaving the VP30 on 24x7 .... i wonder how much power it draws in standby.
