You need to think of CRT as a hobby. For some unknown reason I enjoy experimenting and modifying these projectors. To be honest I think going digital would be boring, but each to their own.

digital, greg, gjaky, I have to laugh at your posts. You guys need to realize not everyone owned a CRT for the same reason especially at this point in time. Crabb gets it. For a lot of people, it was about the best pic available and at the time (decade ago) CRT provided that. Wan wasn't into the hobby DIY aspect of CRT. There are a lot of people like Wan that understand CRT, but have the money to have a pro like Craig set it up for them. As I like to say, unto each their own.

To second Steve's post, I would say it is better to stay with a JVC or like digital since you have lived with one for this long. List it on CL and AVS for $100 or free and it will be gone in a month or two. Give the JVC to Crabb for $200 for his insightful post. Wink Wait on Cedia and see what is new. You didn't give a budget, but Sony should have an updated lineup of 4ks under $10k. Not sure what JVC or Epson will have.

Spanky brings up a very good point. If WanMan was so involved in the CRT scene before, but didn't want to set it up then, I'm sure he would be even less inclined to learn now.

Couldn't agree more.

I guess if it were me, and I was looking to pay someone to set up the CRT, or set up a digital myself, I'd probably go with the JVC.

Exactly. This whole thread is a little crazy on one level. If you have a 9-inch machine, and you know how to set it up well and maintain it yourself, or you can afford to spend money to have Craig or Ken W over to your place once a year, then more power to you. But, to me, it's sill to advise somebody who's been watching digitals for four or five years to spend nearly a grand on doodads and a professional calibrator to set up an 8-inch machine. That's just silly unless somebody really dead-set on going CRT.

By the same token, I wouldn't recommend anybody go drop big bucks on a new projector right now, either. Too much change impending change IMHO.

Wan... Just wait a month or two... There should be some deals on used stuff popping up before and after CEDIA as people start selling stuff in anticipation of new stuff at the show, and AV Science may even be selling off some B-stock stuff right now.

I switched from G70 (very comparable to the Wan's XG) to a JVC RS45 over three years ago. I watched it for two years straight, and I didn't miss the CRT at all. I missed the extremely dark blacks occasionally and sometimes even the very smooth "film-look" to the CRT image, but I was more than happy to trade minor downgrades in those two departments to get rid of the absolute worst part about CRT: the obnoxious noise. I can't wait for my next theater... A big scope screen a single CRT couldn't adequately light up in its dreams, and much better isolation and noise floor. All the electronics will be outside the theater, save for the projector and speakers. I'm planning to put the projector in a soffit with ventilation so there will be nothing but a porthole open. I'm shooting for a very quiet room and really looking forward to it.

Cheers,
SC

I was there. Some days, I still am. That's what bedtime is for. Peace and quiet. They go to bed, I get a couple of hours of "me" time, aka "quiet time". The theater was my refuge, my getaway. Go in there, shut the door, and unplug from the world for two hours. Can't wait to have that back.

I agree with you on your points. It's all good. It's sorta a hobby for me as well. With me, it's also the challenge that I like. I want to get not only the best picture and sound but the best value and see what I can do with as little dollars as possible. Right now I am winning because I have mixed elements of hobby into it that adds value and if cheap enough goes very far.

The Vidikron Vision One w/motorized Chief lift that came as a reconditioned unit from some crazy lady selling off her divorced husbands stuff. I was there at first to buy car parts.
-$45.00

The HDMI moome card (taken from a local 8500 someone bought and added....chucked the rest)
-$50.00

The Red C element (taken from a 1292 and threw away the rest)
-$100.00

Darbee Darblet 5000(Amazon seller)
-$125.00

Infinity Speakers (traded for IT work)
-FREE

Onkyo system with HDMI and corresponding speakers that were left be previous company that occupied the building we moved into for work so I claimed them.
-FREE

120 inch Da-Lite High Power fixed screen
-$100.00

Rack Cabinet with power conditioners I got from work
-FREE

This is pretty much as far as I really want to go. Nut jobs like Curt, Cliff, and Nash obviously take it to the extreme with the blends. No offense guys! Your just nuts! Very Happy

Well, I did wink and the RS20 probably isn't worth more than $700.

@digital,
That is a good list. I have received some good deals through the years, but not everyone is as fortunate or care to wait.

OK, so it seems pricing for additional hardware isn't as bad as I thought, or as time passed it has come down for the effective needs. Also, I apologize for not responding sooner, but my professional world has changed in the last year and I am now forced to work like other humans. This means working more than an hour or two per night--efficiency if a product of slow, dumb f*ck*** I have to work with. Nothing worse than having to work 6-10 hours a night.

OK, so I need to contact Craig. Is he still active on this board? BTW, I certainly don't mind using another room for setting up the XG. I still haven't taken the GE Imager 601 down from the temp HT room upstairs. Not running, but the thought of taking it down from the ceiling by myself causes my butt to clench.

I'd be happy to setup your NEC. I've also got some really good second hand Lumagen hardware coming in that would be a perfect match. This includes a RadianceXE+ with 3D that my client just upgraded to a RadiancePRO.

I love the latest NEC CRT projectors especially the LC models. I had a 1351LC of my own for quite a while and know the projector really well.

Email me if you want to talk about it.
