Mad Max: Fury Road got stellar reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (98% / 90%) so I decided to go see it last night.
And I wondered if I was in the wrong theater. Most of the movie I was thinking this couldn't be the same show that got such great ratings. What a ludicrous, incoherent, stupid, noisy waste of two hours!!!
I get the whole "suspension of disbelief" thing. I know it's a "fantasy" story and doesn't have to play by logical rules. But I got really tired of the "obvious nonsense" stuff they kept throwing at me -- anything from the "water is optional" suggestions to "Max & Furiosa are driving away in the distance, bad guys are a mile behind them, then in no time the bad guys catch up with them but can't pass them." And of course the idea of wantonly destroying vehicles and tons of gasoline doesn't make much sense when gasoline is supposed to be the most precious commodity, but that's been an issue since the first Mad Max. Some of the absurdity was funny, like the guitar-playing rockstar in the bad guys' caravan, but mostly it was just dumb.
And I didn't give a sh*t about Max through about 90% of the movie. He was just a non-person, with almost no dialog, until he took the mask off. Pretty much the same for Furiosa.
Obviously a lot of people and a lot of critics thought it was a great movie. I didn't.

You would make a good critic Gary.. Strait and to the point. No useless rhetoric to make it seem like you understand the art. That part I really appreciated. I wondered about this movie, mostly if it was worth going to see. You have thoroughly cleared that up for me. Thanks

Yeah it wasn't a character building movie for sure. I saw it at the Drive-In, in the rain and usually that annoys me but not this time. It was one long convoluted chase scene with a pretty weak ending. The silver spray paint on the teeth was bizarre too.

The thing is, I really enjoy a lot of dumb popcorn movies, kid movies, superhero movies, you name it. I don't need French subtitles or psychoanalylitic angst to enjoy a flick -- just entertain me. But screaming in my face isn't entertaining.

I'm still going to watch the BD once it's released on disc

And you may enjoy it! Especially if you control the volume. And you can hit pause if you need a break from the stupidity.

Yeah well, I am fully prepared to hate the movie... so maybe I will like it with very lowered expectations

I always check the rating by "top critics" because the overall rating includes what I guess you would call "hobby critics". Top critics are guys that do it for a living.
Even filtering out the hack critics, it still got tremendous revues. They flat gushed over it: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mad_max_fury_road/reviews/?type=top_critics
Hard to imagine so many pro critics being so far off the mark, Gary. Maybe it's just not for you.

I completely agree. Went to see it with some friends from out of town, thought it was the worst two hours I had sat through in a long time.
Not even just a lack of character building, but a lack of plot too! But I suppose that was part of the point (or lack thereof).

So a few nights back I started to watch and I only made it to 27 minutes before I had to give up. What a horrible movie. I can't understand the high ratings for this one either.
I finish almost every movie I watch and rarely quite before it's over... it was that bad!
Oh well!

Made it to the end. It was certainly different. The colours looked great on the big screen. I would not of related it to previous Mad Max movies.
