Hi,

I've just gotten my first CRT projector, a Barco 701s data. After reading up on setups guides online and the owners manual, I started it up and getting no picture. The green lights are on, and there are no red lights. Looking into the tubes there are red green and blue lights flickering, but they wont turn properly on to make a picture. Anyone knows what to do? Is the projector broken or is it just that I'm noob at this?

Please help Smile

Hello

You need to connect a source that the Barco is capable of displaying, and you have to select that input on the Barco so it has something to show. Component from a cable box, satellite or BluRay is NOT Rgb, so that would be a typical noob misconception.

Not all projectors come rigged to display every kind of signal format, i.e. composite, component (aka YPrPb), S-video, rgbhv, HDMI etc. Some projectors will take plug-in accessory modules into the rear of the projector, others need outboard transcoder devices to display properly.

Not all projectors will display every available resolution; 1080P is above the capability of many entry-level machines.

I am not a Barco nerd so someone else needs to step up and help you further.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how I got it working. Just pushed the adj button a little bit harder and I got picture and not just flickering lights. Next thing is to do a decent calibration, and then hook up my PS3 via component so I can try out Blueray in 720p or 1080i to figure out what resolution looks best. As far as I understand the Barco 701s data has a komponent transcoder and the ability to show both 720p and 1080i.

TV/Projector: ECP 4500 (Vidikron box), ECP4500+, wanting 07MS/07MTS, evaluating pc soft-blend

Hi -

Your 701 and my ECP 4500 use the same tubes as one another: Sony 07MS (or someone might have slipped in sd187s on you). I find my machine resolves 1080i and it looks nice, but 720p is soft. I think our machines most likely use the same lenses as well, HD-6C. Your lenses may be tinted and coupled to tubes with clear glycol...I'm not sure. That said, the 701 is ranked a little higher I *suspect* because the internal circuits are just a little cleaner in how they handle the signal, etc. OR it is just advanced setup features that are nice. Others could explain why.

Anyway, it sounds like you read-through the materials on here, but if you missed it, in Curt's primer there are images to show you want things look like when the scan lines are spaced, just-touching, and overlapping.

Bottom line: at about 80" screen width or so you should have a very viewable 1080i image from about 13feet back.

bests,
Matt
