|
|
Well, I'm finally hanging the last of the drywall in my basement HT, and it'll be time to get the projector back on the ceiling as soon as I find someone to mud and tape.
So, I should buy some screen material soon. Does anyone have experience with Seymour's XD and UF material? I'll be making my own frame and using Seymour material primarily due to cost. I've heard that XD is preferred for CRT due to its higher gain, but I will be sitting fairly close, 9 or so feet from the screen, in order to fit a second row behind me, and I'd hate to have an aggressive weave ruin the experience.
To put things in perspective, I had a black-out cloth screen before, and sat at the same distance for a number of movies before starting finishing the room to make sure I'd like the seating distance. I didn't notice any weave in the cloth at that distance, not anything that was distracting anyway.

With a 9-foot viewing distance, I think you're right on the edge with the XD material. If you have good eyes, you might want to go to the UF material, but you will take a hit on brightness. What size screen and what projector?
We can bat it around, but I'd suggest just emailing Chris with your exact viewing distance and asking him which screen material you have. It might take him a day, but tell him you want to place an order, and want to make sure you get the right material. He may also be able to send you some sample squares so you can tape them on the wall and look a them.

I'm thinking a 96" width from a Barco 1209s.
Sent in a contact request, sounds like they'll send out a couple samples.
Would it be fair to expect that my bare black-out material would have been similar in gain to UF?
I should really have gotten samples and made this decision while the projector was still on the ceiling before... hindsight is 20/20 I guess
