Hi everyone. I am the recent owner of a panasonic VT60 but a long time utilizer of the grayscale calibration for dummies guide that Kal has developed. I am a frequent browser of the forums but infrequent poster. In fact i never post as someone always has an answer to my question somewhere in the forums!
I am trying to squeeze the best possible picture out my VT60 with the chromapure software, calibration disc, Kals guide, and my Display 3 pro.
I use the TV exclusively for video games and bluerays at night. So i dont worry about a daytime calibration.
Using Kals guide, day and medium light scenes blow my socks off and look amazing. they are just jaw dropping gorgeous.
BUT I feel like during dark or night scenes blacks are to black and that the display is to dark. i feel like blackness is overwhelming and there should be more detail and light and maybe shades of black and gray.......?? I just dont know!
I have no problems following Kals guide. It is very userfriendly with the chromapure calibration disc and software
I adjust brightness until i JUST cant make out even a tiny bit of the below black lines outline, so that the below black lines are flush with the rest of the display.
I adjust the contrast until luminescence is exactly 35.
I do the 10 point grayscale calibration
I set the gamma at 2.2 and do the 10 point calibration to get every setting from 90-10 IRE to 2.2.
then i go back and do the grayscale again
then the advanced color management for red green blue cyan etc
Everything makes sense, and i follow his guide to the T but i feel that perhaps im missing a tiny nuance somewhere along the line to really bring out dark scenes......
I also of course set my TV to standard RGB and my gaming consoles to standard RGB so they match, i dont have any mismatch between a 0-255 tv and a console set to 16-235 or visa versa. both are set to limited or standard.
And i have the panel brightness at mid. low, mid and high being the options for baseline light production of the screen. Apparently a mid setting is hailed as the best?
Should i try a gamma of 2.4 and 10 point gamma calibration to 2.4? A lot of big name AV forum users on various sites seem to think a gamma of 2.4 is the way to go.
Should i raise brightness so that i can just barely barely barely make out below black lines?
What about contrast? Should i pump it up a bit? Many forums with people calibrating their VT60s list their calibrated contrast settings considerably higher than what i put mine at to achieve a 35 luminescence.......
Alrighty thanks for any tips or tricks guys. Id love to hear anyones thoughts on the matter!
