okay mac, its ordered, delivery expected Jan 28.
until it gets here, 1/4 Inch) Stereo Plug to 3.5mm Stereo Jack Adaptor that i can plug in a stereo earbud. i can remove the 2 buds from the wires and connect them one at a time to the speaker, is that what you were talking about doing?

Actually if you want to try anything I would rather you try this. On the main board, locate CN1 which is circled in the image below. These are the full output lines from the amp board. Disconnect this harness from the main board. Using your regular speaker, connect the speaker ground to 1 of the black speaker connectors on the back of the receiver. Then connect the other speaker wire to the FR line, in the connector that you removed from CN1 and see if the volume is still low and distorted. You can also try the FL to compare. Also, while connected to the FR you can try plugging in the head phone again. This time the speaker will not cut off. See if the distortion changes.

i've got a problem with CN1, it is hard wired to the main. it unplugs from the amp board so i have to unplug it from the amp board and figure a way to connect the speaker wire to it the pin without shorting anything out.

That is why it is nice to have all different kinds of extra harnesses laying around.

Keep the boards connected when testing, or you'll blow parts on the amp board.....Remember my pioneer Mac.

Unfortunately for this test it must be disconnected.
But yes, this brings up a point.
jgrice, before you connect your speaker as indicated in this test, connect your DMM in place if the speaker and set it on DC voltage just to make sure there is no DC on that line. Meaning, neg probe in black speaker connector and pos probe on FR pin on amp board.

okay mac, i have several 5 pin connectors but none of them fit, the plug on the receiver is keyed and all the plugs that i have come up with are not. so, i have removed the amp board and i will solder a wire to the right front connector and then re-install the board and see what i've got.

okay mac, still low volume and distortion when i turn it up. and i said before, you can't hear anything out of the speaker until you turn the volume up to about 50%. then to actually hear what is playing the volume has to be turned almost to the max and at that point the sound is distorted. so this tells us that the problem is in the amp board since the pre-amp was ruled out with the headphones, correct?

Did you try plugging in the headphone while doing this test?

you are right, nothing from the headphones. i listened closely with my ear close to the speaker, and with the volume control at 35% you can hear undistorted sound, by the time you turn it to 50% i don't have to have my ear close to the speaker but the distortion is there. i noticed that the sound does not increase beyond 50%
