The scaler I have is the LUMAGEN PRO and unfortunately it is jut all BNC connectors
with composite/S-Video component and RGBHV inputs and RGBHV scaled outputs and a RGBHV pass through and thats it
I would like to get it all going eventually and make better use of the Blu Ray, but I have yet to get my head around how best to go about it, but I am sure IT WILL HAPPEN !! |
My point is you are getting a softer image no matter what you do because of your setup.

Proceed to yoke modding if you are ready, carefully remove the threaded collars and move the yokes further forward.

He would be better off just using a HD Fury 3 or 4 and either going 1080i 60Hz with the HDF3 or 1080i 96Hz with a HDF4.
If he is running the signal from component out of the bluray player itll be 1080i out anyway, component only has 50MHz bandwidth.

Sure that work as well. He needs to run HDMI out of his BD player. I would make it clear that there is no problem with the RGBHV analog into the 808 but there is a problem using analog out of the BD player which means the BD player is performing the digital to analog conversion. You always end up with a softer imaging using anything other than the HDMI out of the BD player. I haven't tested every BD player but with those that I have the result is consistent and its a soft image. HDMI digital out of the BD and then converted to analog via a Lumagen scaler works well and provides a much sharper image. Case may well have tested the Fury I have not but I have tested Moomes MUX-HD which will strip HDCP and allow the your scaler to output HD from its analog connections.
You can fool around with the focus issues that you have but until you deal with this no matter how good your projector focus the image will be soft if its analog all the way from the BD player.
You must have a very old version of the Lumagen Pro if it only has analog input. Get a later version if possible I have a Lumagen Vision PRO HDP which has all the analog stuff (input and output) and also DVI input and output.

As you can see Casey, (spent all day doing this) really hard plastic, used a hacksaw blade, also after inspecting the "job" this morning I realised that to actually make any difference at all I would have to cut the yoke lugs off at the point where the clamp was originally and cut the focus thread off completely, however I did notice that removing the coil thread completely left me with no facility to centre the coil on the rear of the yoke, but it would give us more forward movement, this I have done,
After putting it all back together the yoke seems quite stable, and the coil is now only held by the back clamp, all pushed up very tight, and because the coil is so tight to the rear of the yoke assembly, what little play there is in the coil laterally is non existant so everything seems to be OK, do not know what might happen when the unit gets very warm, there may or may not be issues with regard to expansion.
Apart from the fact that your blood is worth bottling, the before and after results are as follows
BEFORE BEST FOCUS
RED= 15
GREEN =13
BLUE = 10
AFTER ALTERATION BEST FOCUS
RED = 44
GREEN = 33
BLUE = 30
Having said that those figures are based on no manipulation of the astig rings from neutral, I will get to that later, if you think that these numbers are now acceptable, I will make some arrangements to get the thing inverted on the ceiling and set the whole thing up.
With regard to your comments about the HD Fury I heartily agree but our budget does not really run to that (maybe one fine day) I do want to see what happens with the Fury or Moome, or whatever come along it would be nice to see what the CINE really can look like especially with the new tubes
I am sure I am not finished with this by a long shot, but I heartily thank you and yours for such magic support !!

Mate its no worries at all, im glad we got you sorted. We have been over that set with a fine tooth comb, and it should now serve you quite well for a fair while to come.
I have a HDF 3 here if you want it, i wont be needing it, so youre welcome to it if you like.

Hello km987654
I could not agree with you more, but old age and the attendant pensions put such items in the "wish" basket, all the gear that I have was purchased around 2005/5 it was up to date then, but time marches on and I have to to the best with what I have got here, at least for the present, but many thanks for your input and suggestions, they are noted,
Regards

Early on in the piece it was really quite a hard call to make, i was swinging between tube issues and potential splitter issues, it sure did seem to me as though the set was operating fine electronics wise.
What you want to do with that blue is get your astig as perfect as you can mechanically, set the electronic astig, then set all zones of electronic focus as even as you can, and i would then add ten to your centre focus number. This should give you nice even blue defocus for good greyscale, and blue being over focused like that will have no real impact on your overall image sharpness, the NEC sets actually have a switch or menu setting to do this automatically. Colour reproduction will be alot nicer and more even.

Casey, your offer of the HD Fury sounds like an offer I cannot really pass on, so perhaps you could tell me what you want for it, it would be great to take this one step further, I have only in very recent times bought a few BluRays and have been given a few as presents so I store them in anticipation that I will get to see the difference at some point.
I take it that the focus numbers I sent you are acceptable to you in the scheme of things, as they are a VAST improvement over the original, don't know what I would have done without you!

Yeah mate those numbers are what i would consider as good as youll get, and shouldnt have any negative affect on stability.
